I remember reading an interesting story about a lobster fishery somewhere on the coast of USA. They had a thriving lobster fishery, the only problem was sharks. Sharks used to harass the fishermen from time to time. Also, the fishermen claimed that sharks eat lobsters, thereby reducing their catch. They demanded that government do something about the sharks.

Well, the government has to listen to the voters. So they killed all the sharks in the coastal water, one by one. What nobody knew that while sharks may eat a few lobsters, their staple food was octopus, and the staple food of octopus was lobster. With the sharks eliminated, the population of octopus exploded without limit, and the lobster fishery collapsed in a couple of years.

Later they realized their mistake and tried to reintroduce the sharks in the coastal water, but that is easier said than done. It is expensive and difficult, there is no guarantee that the sharks will stay in the coaster waters and not migrate elsewhere.
