A 7.0 magnitude Earthquake is not large as large Earthquakes go but the damage depends to a large extent on the type of construction. Looking at the fallen buildings in Haiti, there doesn't seem to be a lot of rebar or reinforcing steel in evidence. In that huge Earthquake in Alaska a few years ago, a few buildings survived much higher magnitudes than this.
