Meteors.
We were on our way home from friends' place in Kloneville one night and saw one that looked like it landed in the Okanagan straight down the road in front of us. It actually burnt up before hitting the trees in the hills farther past the lake. It looked like it was only a couple hundred yards in front of us but it was 3 or 4 miles away.
Meteors and meteorites are moving with high velocity. Ball lightning doesn't, it wanders. So if what the lady saw was ball lightning, it was close, if she saw a meteor, it was a ways away.
