The incident happened near Oundle, north eastern Northamptonshire

A nine-year-old girl has been found strangled to death in the cab of a lorry parked on the side of a busy A-road.

The body of a man, understood to be the girl's stepfather, was discovered shortly afterwards hanged in woodland close to the scene.

Northamptonshire Police have launched a murder investigation after the girl was found on Saturday afternoon on the side of the A605 near Warmington, Northants.

Investigating officers said there were no suspicious circumstances relating to the man's death but they have not ruled out the involvement of a third party.

Senior investigator, Detective Chief Inspector Tricia Kirk, said:'We are investigating the murder of a young girl and the death of a man who was known to her.

'While we have not at this stage ruled out the possible involvement of a third party, the evidence strongly suggests that it is unlikely that anyone else is involved in the two deaths.

'This is a tragic incident for two families and we are working closely with them as part of our investigation.

'I am keen to establish the movement of the Spar lorry, to ascertain what route it took through the Midlands and the county and when it parked by the side of the A605.'

Neither deceased has been named yet by police, but officers have confirmed that they are not from Northamptonshire.

Both bodies were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary on Saturday night for forensic post mortem examinations.

The initial cause of death for the girl has been given as strangulation and hanging for the man.

Police received a call at 2pm on Saturday from an HGV company, concerned that one of its delivery lorries had not returned to base.

The man and the girl began their journey at about 3am on Friday and were due to return to the lorry's base later that day.

The vehicle, a Spar delivery lorry, was tracked to the A605 near Warmington and was discovered parked in a lorry park next to the Jet filling station.

The cab of the lorry was not locked and officers discovered the body of the girl in the cab.

A wider search was carried out and police discovered the body of a man hanging from a tree close to the lorry park.

Police believe that the vehicle was parked in the lorry park at some time late on Friday
