They say that when it comes to Marmite, you either love it or you hate it.

Jesus must be one of those who loves it, because a woman in Rhondda, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has found him in one of her jars!

The Marmite messiah: How a mother found Jesus in a jar

It is hardly the most heavenly time of day. But as Claire Allen bustled about getting her four-year-old's breakfast, the Lord moved in a very mysterious way.

The mother of three says she suddenly noticed the face of Christ looking at her from the lid of the Marmite jar.

'I couldn’t believe it,' she said.

Pot luck: The Marmite lid showing the likeness of Jesus Christ found by South Wales mother Claire Allen

'I opened the Marmite jar and put it on the breakfast bar, and the lid caught my eye.

'I just looked at it and immediately thought, that’s Jesus Christ.

'It wasn’t a new jar, but I’d never noticed that before.'

Mrs Allen, 36, who says she is 'not particularly religious,' showed the lid to the rest of her family, husband Gareth, and two older sons Tomas, 11 and Jamie, 14.

'Straight away Jamie said "that looks like God", and my other boys even said they could see a face,' she said.

She said she took comfort from the image.

'People might think I’m nuts, but I like to think it’s Jesus looking out for us,' she said from the family home in Rhondda, South Wales.

'We’ve had a tough couple of months; my mum’s been really ill and it’s comforting to think that if he is there, he’s watching over us.

'I often see Jesus’ face in a lot of things I do. And there are a few times I can think of when I’ve seen the face of Jesus in a window.

'But he’s never appeared in my food before.'

Mrs Allen's discovery is the the most recent of several religious sightings in otherwise mundane objects.

In May last year, a drinker spotted the face of Jesus in the foil of a bottle of larger, while likenesses have been found several times on slices of toast - most notably when a decade-old cheese sandwich bearing the likeness of the Virgin Mary was sold to an online casino in 2004 for £15,000.

The face of Jesus was spotted in this dirty shower curtain in 2005. It was sold for $2,000 to the same casino that purchased the cheese sandwich. Grains of wood on this wardrobe door show a similar likeness
