Right now in the US the pundits are handling this issue like it was threatening to wipe out what the bankers didn't succeed in doing last summer. It must be a slow news day and now the media is whipping it up stating not to get hysterical but then stating what the Flu outbreak of 1918 did. So what?? Considering the number of suspected cases in the states it is still less than .00001% of our population. Be concerned and aware? Yes. Be paniked or near the point of stampeding?? Nope. Not for this situation. The Health organizations of the world are better equipped to handle situations like this far better than they were a decade ago. I'll bet someone makes an industry of this topic just like they have about other natural occurrances.

That's the whole point of epidemics, whether it's in the wild or humans. Population grows to a certain point, some disease or predator surfaces to knock the population down.

Until this morning I might have agreed with you. Now they have announced that a 23 month old baby in the USA has died of - they believe - swine flu. It is spreading rapidly. A woman in Victoria here on Vancouver Island arrived home from Mexico not feeling well and she too had Swine Flu. She did the right thing and kept herself isolated for the 7 days they ask for. I think we all may need to take this whole thing a little more seriously than previously thought.

Most of the newsmedia don't want to be bothered with mundane news like the odd car crash killing a couple people. They want the sensational stuff they can frenzy feed on for weeks. Saves money having people trotting around the planet here, hither, and yon.

Between the usual foreign disease thing, swine flu, and the inane law & "justice" isssues constantly going on in Mexico, it's a bit surprising people still go there to holiday. I know we won't be heading there anytime in the foreseeable future. We'll fly to Costa Rica or Belize or wherever.
