BBC NEWS | Middle East | Gaza detainee treatment 'inhuman'

Palestinians seized during Israel's operation in Gaza faced "appalling" conditions and "inhuman" treatment, Israeli human rights groups have said.

The seven groups say they have gathered 20 testimonies which indicate detainees were kept in pits without shelter, toilets or adequate food and water.

Some detainees also said they had been held near tanks and in combat areas, the groups said.

The Israeli military says it is investigating the allegations.

The accounts were gathered by the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) and Hamoked, the Center for the Defense of the Individual, from Palestinians now being held in Israel.

'Gross violation'
"The reports indicate that... many detainees - minors as well as adults - were held for many hours - sometimes for days - in pits dug in the ground, exposed to bitter cold and harsh weather, handcuffed and blindfolded," the groups said in a statement.

"These pits lacked basic sanitary facilities... while food and shelter, when provided, were limited, and the detainees went hungry," it said.

The groups accused the military of "gross violation of international humanitarian law" by holding some of the detainees close to tanks.

Incidents involving "extreme violence and humiliation by soldiers and interrogators" were also reported, the statement said, without giving details.

"We were handcuffed and blindfolded. They put us in a three-meter deep ditch with some 70 other people," Majdi Muhammad Ayid al-Atar, 43, from northern Gaza described, in one of the testimonies.

"We spent two days there without any food, water or blankets. They also didn't let us go to the toilet. Afterwards they moved us to another ditch. The soldiers kept beating anyone who dared ask for anything," he was quoted as saying.

Lengthy preparation

The groups have addressed a written complaint to the Military Judge Advocate General, and Israel's Attorney General, Meni Mazuz.

Attorney Bana Shoughry-Badarne, Legal Director of PCATI, said the findings were "particularly objectionable" as the Israeli military had repeatedly stressed that it "prepared at length for the Gaza operation".

"It seems that, during these lengthy preparations, the basic rights of the detainees and captives were completely forgotten," she said.

She said the groups had the names of 29 people who had been detained, 25 of whom were still being held.
The other groups were the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, Physicians for Human Rights, B'Tselem, Yesh Din and Adalah.

See... this is what happens when you keep allowing these ass clowns to play the anti-semitic card every damn time someone points out that what they are doing is wrong.

And people wonder why so many over there have hatred for Israel..... Geee.... I have no idea why.

No, it wouldn't have anything to do with them using cluster bombs on civilians, no, it wouldn't have anything to do with them using white phosphorus on civilians..... no, it wouldn't have anything to do with the above examples of mistreatments and inhumanity or their deliberate tactics of killing innocent.

Well afterall, they learned from the best.... do whatever you damn well please and to hold back the world just lie right to their faces to stall for more time in order to do more of whatever you damn well please.

And I bet, yet again, Israel will get away with this crap..... and the more they get away with it, expect even more people to hate Israel and take action.

Israel has nobody else to blame for the situation they are in other then themselves..... their own actions speak all the words that are required.

You'd think a nation full of people who were treated in very much the same way (worse in some cases) by other oppressors would know a thing or two about not repeating history's past mistakes...... but then again, maybe it's a like father like son situation where they were beaten, so they feel it's ok to beat others. :-?

Israel can bite my shiny metal ass.

They should follow Gaza's legal code and throw them off rooftops for holding different opinions.

I also wonder exactly what kind of "bitter cold" they are exposed to on the south Mediteranian accross from the Sahara desert. They got put in lock up, most for a few hours, then were let go.

Take the subject words like "Inhuman" and "Bitter" out of the article, read it as empirical statement, and you'll see its crap.

You're excuses for Israel's actions remain pitiful.

Oh sure, being kept in pits for days without any place to take a crap or pee with some form of dignity, giving them very little food, sticking them by tanks and near conflict zones as human shields.... is simply a walk in the park to you?

Your Israeli Lap Dog Mentality has no bounds, that's for sure.

You can try and pull as many justifications out of your arse for their actions as you want, not one of them will ever be a valid excuse for them to treat anybody like this.

Being kept in a pit for a few hours, in a warzone. Little food, little means what exactly? Is little the amount of careful regulated food an inmate or someone in lockup at county is given? Because thats a tiny portion of food compared to what we tend to eat.

And imagine that, having to crap or pee in front of everyone else in lockup. Can you imagine, being imprisoned with 20 other guys, having to piss and crap infront of everyone, without even going on trial yet? Just for being arrested and being processed?

Cause thats how it goes down here. Ya, up to 48 hours. 48 hours is DAYS, or are we somehow worse.

As for near tanks, its a combat zone. PoWs aren't flown to Tahiti for processing in any nation, they stay at the front till its safe for someone to transfer them back.
