VILNIUS, Lithuania — France dropped a strong hint Thursday that it was willing to answer Canada’s call for reinforcements in Kandahar.
An undetermined number of troops already planned for deployment to Kabul might be moved south, French Defence Minister Herve Morin told reporters following a day of high-level diplomacy and high anxiety about NATO’s struggling mission in Afghanistan.
“I said we would help the Canadians,” Morin said in French about a side discussion he had with Defence Minister Peter MacKay.
But he said when a final decision is made, an announcement would come from French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The idea of redeploying some of the French troops already in Afghanistan was under discussion within the government as part of NATO’s overhaul of its strategy in the war-ravaged country, Morin said.
