LOS ANGELES -- Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to the hospital by more than a dozen police officers in cars, on motorcycles and in helicopters.

A Los Angeles police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the 26-year-old pop star was being taken to the hospital to "get help.'' The Los Angeles Times cited unidentified authorities who said Spears was being placed on a "mental evaluation hold.''

Spears was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where her mother, Lynne, was seen leaving its psychiatric hospital at about 5:30 a.m.

When asked by a throng of paparazzi and reporters whether Britney was doing all right, Lynne Spears replied, "Yeah,'' before leaving in a Range Rover.

Hours earlier, shortly after 1 a.m., the motorcade that pulled away from Spears' residence was nearly the length of a football field. Along with the ambulance, it included police on nearly a dozen motorcycles and in two cruisers. Two police helicopters followed overhead.

The scene was more controlled than the one earlier this month when Spears also was taken away from her home in an ambulance.

On Jan. 3, police were called to her home when she refused to return her two young sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, to ex-husband Kevin Federline, who has custody.

Officers had paramedics haul Spears to a hospital for undisclosed reasons. She was released after a day and a half in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Police also went to Spears' hilltop residence off Mulholland Drive on Monday night after someone reported a swarm of paparazzi trespassing in the singer's gated community.
When officers arrived, they didn't see anyone trespassing, police said, but citations were issued for several illegally parked cars.

Spears has been in a highly public downward spiral since filing for divorce from Federline in November 2006.

Her bizarre antics include shaving her head bald, attacking a car with an umbrella and bringing along a paparazzo pal on trips to a courthouse in her child custody case.

Spears' child custody case has become a public spectacle, with her skipping depositions and twice this month arriving at the courthouse but not attending the hearing.

The most recent incident was last week, when Spears showed up at the downtown civil courts building for a chance to persuade a Superior Court commissioner to change his order and allow her to see her sons.

Dressed as if arriving for a cocktail party -- wearing bright pink lipstick, sunglasses, shiny gold platform shoes and a very short black dress with a ruffled hem -- Spears was driven into an underground garage and then entered the courthouse.

A court spokesman said she got through a security metal detector, then announced, "I want to leave,'' and returned to her car.

Ummm.... Didn't this already happen?

Oh and the scene was under more control then the last time??

Considdering she had her own parade to the hospital with helicopters, police on bikes and cruisers... a football field long..... you call that under control for just one dizzy pop star?

What's gonna happen the third time, Fireworks and the Goodyear blimp to make sure everybody is aware she's off to the funny farm again?

Some people's kids, I tell ya.

She is 100% nuts. Her parents should be seeking a court order to have her locked up and drugged.

I believe her parents have contributed to a good portion of her being a nut ball, as I imagine most of her issues could be related to everything as far back as the Micky Mouse Club crap.

Perhaps her and Michael Jackson should hook up.

My question is why were there a dozen police cars?

That's pretty much why I posted this.... wtf does she have then entire police force out to escort her to the mental ward, but when you get mugged or jumped, they're never around?

Probably because they're escorting celebrities to their hospitals, I imagine. Tax dollars being used at its best.

Yes, her mother certainly has contributed to her downfall, she hasn't done a great job with her other daughter either it looks like.

The MJ and Britney idea scares me to death... lol

Who knows? Perhaps if she gets the proper medication she will be able to function normally again.

And the only time you're paranoid on weed is when you think the police are going to come for you because it's illegal. If it was legal, there'd be nothing to be paranoid about.... well, perhaps if you run out of snacks.

An explosive new report claims that troubled pop star Britney Spears may be battling dementia.

According to The UK Sun, Spears’ father Jamie made the tragic claim when he was filing paperwork to control her finances — and her life — more than a decade ago.

The tabloid said the revelation is discussed at length in a new BBC documentary about the singer’s long descent following a meltdown.

Entitled The Battle For Britney, the program details how Jamie Spears ticked off a box on the paperwork that said: “dementia placement or treatment.”

He gave the alleged diagnosis as the reason for conservatorship over his daughter’s large estate established in 2008. The paperwork is shown in the highly-anticipated doc.

“There’s only two options with that. Britney might have dementia,” journalist Mobeen Azhar explains in the program.

The Baby One More Time singer has been embroiled in a bitter battle with her father for years over her money. Insiders have claimed Jamie is all about keeping control over the cash.

“Now I’m not a doctor but if that’s the case, then the world isn’t aware of that. But the other option is actually more sinister,” Azhar said.

Trouble began for Britney in 2007 when she came off the rails in a very public meltdown that included such bizarre behaviour as shaving her head. Her father has been part of the trust since she imploded.

But members of the so-called #FreeBritney movement believe the star is being stridently — and unfairly — controlled by her father and his team. They have long advocated for the removal of Jamie Spears from the conservatorship.

Friend Billy Brasfield claims he is still in regular contact with the now 39-year-old singer.

“She wants to be able to drive her car when she wants to. In her conservatorship, she does not have that right,” he said.

The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship, will be released on BBC iPlayer on Saturday and is due to air on BBC Two next week.
