Rex Murphy made a pretty strong commentary about this very topic last night:

Death Without Decency

What about their rampaging wallabees-packs of roving killer koalas ,heard a dingo stole a baby once.

The Governor General should have read the warnings before he visit to the Vancouver Downtown Eastside the other day. I'll bet she doesn't venture in there again for a while.

well I thought I would exchange one bit of ridiculousness for another -Almost everybody in Australia lives on the coast because it's a no mans land in the outback- they've got spiders the size of chihuahuas- poisononous snakes everywhere, they make Canada sound like you could walk across the street and get hit by an avalanch. I don't think it's anymore dangerous here than it is there.

I guess they were feeling it.

THE CANADIAN PRESS

The Toronto tourism industry set a record in 2007 with more than 10.6 million overnight visitors.
Toronto Tourism president David Whitaker says the city showed resilience despite challenges, such as new passport rules and the rising dollar.

He says visitors to the city spent more than $4.5 billion on hotels, restaurants, attractions and shopping.
The greatest number of overseas visitors – about 280,000 – were from the United Kingdom, while Mexico and China were the fastest-growing international markets at about 15 per cent growth each.

Whitaker also says hotel occupancy in 2007 across the Toronto region rose to 68.3 per cent, its highest level since 2000.
The Toronto tourism industry, which took a severe hit during the SARS outbreak in 2003, supports nearly 100,000 jobs.

Canada sure isn't the safe country it used to be. Places like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver all experience a crime rate higher than any of us would prefer. That's not the mention the dangerous places in the Praries like Regina!

If you'd like to see more information about countries and travel advisories, take a look at http://www.canadiancontent.net/profiles/. The info there is directly from the Canadian government and the info for Canada was provided by US foreign affairs.
Actually Andem, Canada, like most western countries, has been getting safer and safer as the decades progress.

We simply are more aware of crime than we used to be.

Canada is dangerous and this is embarrassing! We need more laws to protect us because laws keep us safe.

The funny thing is my Gf laughs about this. We here (reading posts) seem to have taking things a tad personally, what with the kicking poop out of Koalas and citing spider/snake ratios and all.

We're still considdered safe by their standards, overall compared to the other countries they listed. Every country is going to have a few semi-negative things to point out to those who travel.

Perhaps in comparison, we should see what they say about the US.

heh heh.

Terrorism

.....US officials have said that the US has "no credible information pointing to a specific imminent attack or the timing or execution of such an attack". But they have indicated that "the warning is clear" and that they are taking it seriously.
Ha ha... There's a threat... We know there is.... no we have no evidence or any actual threats towards us at the time, but we know they're out there.

Crime

Crime rates are higher in the larger cities, such as New York, Los Angeles and Houston. Tourists are often targeted for petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft, particularly on public transport.

Natural Disasters, Severe Weather and Climate

Bush and forest fires often occur in the United States......

.....The United States is subject to a wide range of natural hazards including: hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and earthquake activity around the Pacific Basin including Hawaii; tornadoes in the midwest and southeast; mud slides in California; forest fires in the west; and flooding.

Wildlife Watching

Australians are advised to maintain a safe and legal distance when observing wildlife, including marine animals and birds. You should only use reputable and professional guides or tour operators and closely follow park regulations and wardens' advice.
Yeah.... be careful when you chase after those stray dogs and cats in the ally.

My generalizations are never ment to be absolutes, which is why I referenced examples in my post of what I was mainly referring to.
