WASHINGTON–Toy-maker Fisher-Price is recalling 83 types of toys – including the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters – because their paint contains excessive amounts of lead.
The worldwide recall being announced Thursday involves 967,000 plastic preschool toys made by a Chinese vendor and sold in the United States between May and August. It is the latest in a wave of recalls that has heightened global concern about the safety of Chinese-made products.

You're not the first to mention that this morning. Seems that a number of examples where out sourcing to a company set up in the economic thrid world has become more expensive than doing it right, here at home.

They get worse...the export stuff is suppossed to be better...that being said not everything in china is worse but the worse is available8O

when buying from a factory in china it goes like this.

You tell them what you want and they show you different variations of the same product.

They can make it ,looking for a metaphor here, "German standard"..
Like here is the top quality it will cost you $25.00 US dollars.
Same product gets cheaper and cheaper and cheesier to the point
where you can purchase this one for .45 US cents....
I'm serious here....

Most dollar store items in Canada are still not the cheapest..
I know importers and i've seen the samples.

I try to avoid buying anything manufactured in China these days, not so easy to do though.

North American businesses love China and India... Manufacture your product in China, support it from India.

Market motion is based on the comsumer's behavior. Toys are kind of general homogeneous products instead of hi-tech. Everbody can make it and everybody can buy it. It is up to the comsumer to decide whether he/she likes to save a few bucks to go cheaper. Because somebody wants it, somebody serves it.
