The concert will probably be a yawner. I'm sure Skuzuki and Gore will call it a success, though
So how do you feel about concerts as a whole? Should the practice of entertainment be stopped altogether? As well, how about air travel for non-emergency services? Do you feel that should be stopped too?
Ok given the same circumstances, how would you go about achieving the same objective?
First, what is the objective? What do you actually want to happen?
Secondly, is it realistic? Can your objective be achieved?
Thirdly, will all the world participate or will we have special exemptions for India and China?
It's the same objective. A positive outcome.
Of course. I don't see why not.
It being a personal matter, I don't see what the countries of China and India have to do with it.
But that only avoids the question. Do you have an answer?
China is building a new coal power plant per week. Can we seriously cut down our CO2 to comphensate for that? Even if we can, that assumes that today's levels are OK which they are not. It makes no sense for us to endure hardship or loss of standard of living unless EVERYBODY is doing it equally. It makes no sense for me to worry about my carbon footprint when you look at the dealers lot and see it full for brand new SUVs waiting to take on the wicked commutes along the 401.
Banning non-emergency air travel is a good idea but not realistic in today's world. Who will fly you in the case of an emergency? Air Canada isn't going to be sitting there waiting for the occasional flight. Who defines what an emergency is? If my mom died in Saskatchewan, is that an emergency? What if she was just sick? And again, will that save enough for China to build 2 more coal power plants? That will last us 2 weeks.
The objective is unattainable without every country being on board. Until they are, you question is unanswerable.
Ok you seem to really be struggling with the question here so I'll cut you a break.
The object of Live Earth was to spread awareness of the problem and raise money to support an organization that will as it's mandate, continue to raise awareness and provide simple steps for individual to help cut their contribution to green house gases.
So my question to you was, since you seem to feel that these concerts and celebrity awareness campaigns are a waste of time and effort as they themselves don't solve the problem they are raising awareness about, how would you go about raising awareness of the issues and spread information to the public?
I'm saying the public isn't going to do much good if the government of China keeps doing what its doing. It doesn't matter if the public knows about it because there is didly squat the public can do about it. So your question is mute.
They are trying to raise awareness of a non-existent problem. Gore is making millions with this scam.
Doug the word is "Moot" not "Mute".
China isn't the rest of the world and has been greatly influenced by the people as an emerging industrialized nation. So saying the government is building coal plants means that there is nothing to be done about Global Warming is preposterous. But people need to know the facts and that happens through education.
A point you've made many many times though is that it's people driving SUVs that are the problem. But if as you say it doesn't matter as long as China builds coal power production, then why all the hysteria about SUVs? By the rules you set out here, you are building a strawman to beat people with when you actually feel that things like SUVs don't make a difference anyway.
For a time I was optimistic that people could change and would change. I am no longer so. People are STILL driving SUVs. They are still buying SUVs. They are using them for simple commuting. Nothing much has changed or is changing.
You view it as irrelivant but China is excempt from the Kyoto accord. It can and is increasing its greenhouse emmissions weekly.
What point does it do me to reduce my lifestyle in order to try to save the planet for other people and countries to destroy? It seems pointless to me. We will eventually burn up, drown, starve or whatever but we will do it together.
If on the other hand you can show me anything really changing, I will gladly reconsider my position. Until then, why worry?
