It's over: Prince William and Kate Middleton split up.

Breaking news this morning: Prince William and Kate Middleton have split up, meaning that Kate isn't going to be the future Queen. And the souvenir mugs and plates that have been made to celebrate their "impending" engaging have gone to waste:

Prince William and his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton have split up, a source confirmed today.

The couple, who met at St Andrews University, have reached an "amicable agreement" to end their relationship.

The source confirmed the 24-year-old second-in-line to the throne and 25-year-old Kate had gone their separate ways.

The split was caused by the huge pressures on the young couple and because of the time William has devoted to Army life, The Sun reported.

Clarence House refused to comment. A spokesman for the Prince said: "We don't comment on Prince William's private life."

William is training to be an armoured troop commander at Camp Bovington in Dorset while Kate is working as an accessories buyer.

The couple were widely tipped to one day tie the knot, with speculation mounting after Kate attended William's graduation parade at Sandhurst in December.

It was the first time she had attended such a high profile event where the Queen and other senior members of the family were present. Dating a future King saw Miss Middleton propelled into the spotlight.

She faced a barrage of press outside her home on her birthday in January and recently lodged a complaint with the Press Complaint Commission over alleged harassment, which she later settled.

With news of their split, royal fans' hopes for a William and Kate wedding have been dashed. The source refused to go into details, saying simply "That's life."

The couple's relationship has been under strain since William passed out from Sandhurst as an Army officer last December.

Since William started his training course in Dorset on March 16 they have seen each other no more than once a week.

A "close friend" of the couple told the paper: "As far as Kate is concerned, William simply hasn't been paying her enough attention. "She is stuck in London while he is living in an officer's mess in Dorset.

"Kate feels hugely frustrated that their relationship just seems to be going backwards at a rate of knots."

Kate wisely kept her distance from major royal events, although the royals only tend to invite those who have married into the family to official engagements.

There was no sign of her at Charles's marriage to his former mistress Camilla Parker Bowles in April 2005, nor at official engagements such as Trooping the Colour.

But she did attend the wedding of William's close friend Hugh van Cutsem in June the same year.

The couple were cautious. They were said to avoid acting affectionately in front of friends, both keenly aware of the media interest in their relationship.

Kate clearly though found the media attention that came with being Prince William's girlfriend too much at times.

In October 2005, her legal team wrote to newspaper editors appealing to the press to leave her and her family alone.

They claimed she was being followed by photographers on an almost daily basis since leaving university.

She used media lawyers from Harbottle & Lewis, who have represented the Prince of Wales.

The problem grew worse early this year and there were reports her lawyers were considering taking legal action to stop the paparazzi harassing her.

She later complained to the Press Complaints Commission over a picture that appeared in the Daily Mirror, but settled the issue shortly after.

On her 25th birthday, she had been greeted outside her home by a media scrum.

There were reports in 2005 that the couple's relationship had cooled off, but in the November of that year, it seemed to be going from strength to strength. Meeting the New Zealand ("All Blacks") rugby team at a Palace reception, William told All Blacks forward Ali Williams that everything was great when the sports star enquired about his girlfriend.
The player revealed: "He said it was going well, going steady. He seemed very content."

Oh for the day when the world does not consider this sort of story "breaking news", as if somehow who the Prince dates is of any importance to anybody in the world!
I'd rather read this fluffery than what our 'news' has been offering these days...apparently William has been inviting other women to his kip in the barracks...
Middleton is one smart woman - perhaps too smart for the Royals who aren't known for their high intellect.
This is refreshing to read, after the months of Anna Nicole non news!
I'm shattered and crushed.
