I know from personal conversations I had with Admiral Kidd that President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered him to conclude that the attack was a case of “mistaken identity” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Admiral Kidd told me, after returning from Washington, D.C. that he had been ordered to sit down with two civilians from either the White House or the Defense Department, and rewrite portions of the court’s findings.
Admiral Kidd also told me that he had been ordered to “put the lid” on everything having to do with the attack on USS Liberty. We were never to speak of it and we were to caution everyone else involved that they could never speak of it again. I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of that statement as I know that the Court of Inquiry transcript that has been released to the public is not the same one that I certified and sent off to Washington.

Which certainly does not prove malice on the part of the Israelis............in fact, it would seem to indicate that the administration was convinced it was an accident, and wanted the incident to be put behind them ASAP.
Contrary to assertions made by Israel and its supporters, the United States has never officially accepted the explanation or excuses offered by Israel. Quite the contrary, the official U.S. position is that the attack was "quite literally incomprehensible" and showed a "wanton disregard for human life." (The word "wanton" was later removed, though the general concept remained.)

The key word here is "officially"........hard to accept any explanation when you have dozens of greiving mothers and wives to deal with. You will also notice the US does NOT accuse Israel of a deliberate attack..............instead they accuse them of negligence. As well, better to let the Israelis take full blame than to talk about refused escorts and misdirected orders......
The Israeli government, the AntiDefamation League, and certain notorious apologists for Israel insist that the attack was a tragic accident and that the US government accepts that assertion. Not so. Virtually every knowledgeable American official with the lone exception of Robert McNamara is on public record calling the attack deliberate and the Israeli story untrue. Here are a few of those American leaders.

Which once again fails to answer the relevant questions:
1. If the attack was deliberate, WHY?
2. If the attack was deliberate, WHY didn't they finish the job?
If this was supposedly a crime, motive is missing, and opportunity (to finish it) was missed.
In fact, such an attack would be idiotic, as the Israelis depend on American military supplies, and were at the time pleading with the Americans for 50 A-4 bombers........which they didn't get, for obvious reasons.
It simply makes no sense.
