NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Al Gore, a leading voice in the fight against global warming, is being called a hypocrite by a conservative group that claims his Nashville mansion uses too much electricity.
A spokesperson for Gore said the former U.S. vice-president invests in enough renewable energy to make up for the home's power consumption.
Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which chronicled his campaign against global warming, won an Academy Award Sunday.
The next day, the Tennessee Centre for Policy Research – which disputes whether global warming is a serious problem – put out a news release saying Gore was not doing enough to reduce his own electricity consumption.
"We wanted to see if he was living by his own recommendations and walking the walk," said president Drew Johnson, who believes the threat outlined in Gore's documentary is exaggerated.
Utility records show the Gore family paid an average monthly electric bill last year of about $1,200 (all figures U.S.) for the 10,000-square-foot home.
Bills showed the Gores used about 191,000 kilowatt hours in 2006. The typical Nashville household uses about 15,600 kilowatt-hours a year.
Gore spokesperson Kalee Kreider said he buys enough "green power" – renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane gas – to balance 100 per cent of electricity costs.
"Sometimes when people don't like the message, in this case that global warming is real, it's convenient to attack the messenger," she said.
Gore participates in a utility program that sells blocks of "green power" for an extra $4 a month. He buys 108 such blocks every month, covering 16,200 kilowatt-hours and helping subsidize renewable energy sources.
Johnson said Gore used nearly 221,000 kilowatt hours last year and his average monthly electric bill was $1,359. He claimed his group obtained its figures from Nashville Electric Service, but a spokesperson said the utility never had a request from the group and never provided them with information.
Gore has been buying the "green power" for $432 a month since November, and his home is also under renovation to add solar panels, Kreider said.
She said focusing on Gore's personal electricity consumption misses the point of An Inconvenient Truth, which is that governments and the public can work together to reduce emissions.

Also missed here is the fact Gore owns more than his Tennessee mansion ...

I wonder why they aren't totalling up the energy usage of the other residences too if they are going to do a "report" on the topic.... condo in San Francisco, residences, in Tennessee, Arlington VA, Washington, D.C. private jets when on the move.... blah blah

Al Gore's Do As I Say, Not As I Do Philosophy

Author, Hoover Research Fellow and National Center board member Peter Schweizer has an op-ed in USA Today this morning that is probably giving headaches to former Vice President Al Gore.

It seems that for all Gore's green talk, the former VP isn't exactly acting as though he believes the dire warnings in his movies, slide shows and public appearances.

Says Peter, in part:
Al Gore has spoken: The world must embrace a 'carbon-neutral lifestyle.’ To do otherwise, he says, will result in a cataclysmic catastrophe. 'Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb,' warns the website for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. 'We have just 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tailspin.'

Graciously, Gore tells consumers how to change their lives to curb their carbon-gobbling ways: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, use a clothesline...
Pause for a minute. Has anyone ever seen a picture of Al Gore putting clothes on a clothesline? Even one (staged pics don't count)? Does he even have clotheslines at his residences for his servants to use? Resuming excerpt of Peter's op-ed:
...drive a hybrid, use renewable energy, dramatically cut back on consumption. Better still, responsible global citizens can follow Gore's example, because, as he readily points out in his speeches, he lives a 'carbon-neutral lifestyle....'

... For someone who says the sky is falling, he does very little. He says he recycles and drives a hybrid. And he claims he uses renewable energy credits to offset the pollution he produces when using a private jet to promote his film...
Pause again. Give me a break. Gore can't fly commercial, even to help save the planet? Resuming excerpt...
...Public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. (He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.) For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself.

Then there is the troubling matter of his energy use. In the Washington, D.C., area, utility companies offer wind energy as an alternative to traditional energy. In Nashville, similar programs exist. Utility customers must simply pay a few extra pennies per kilowatt-hour, and they can continue living their carbon-neutral lifestyles knowing that they are supporting wind energy...

...But according to public records, there is no evidence that Gore has signed up to use green energy in either of his large residences. When contacted Wednesday, Gore's office confirmed as much but said the Gores were looking into making the switch...

...Maybe our very existence isn't threatened...
There's more.

By coincidence, the Chicago Defender published today (with a disclaimer noting Peter's connection to our group) a review of Peter's last book by National Center Research Associate Nick Cheolas. Nick's review begins:
Most liberals enjoy portraying themselves as the champions of minority interests and "social justice," defending the allegedly defenseless against oppression from the rich and powerful.

But does the liberal elite live by its own rhetorical standards? Not according to author Peter Schweizer. In his new book, Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy, Schweizer points out the blatant hypocrisy practiced by many of the liberal community's leading figures…
In a commentary that apparently applies well to Al Gore, Nick concludes: "Liberal rhetoric may be appealing and popular, but it is often hard to live by. Sacrificing for the common good is a noble goal, but it is unfortunate that those on the left who espouse it don't seem to have enough faith to live by their own ideals."

Why?

Because it is a right wing think tank who are looking for something that isn't there.

This is one of those non-stories where a guy is called a hypocrit and we are told that he spends an average of $1200 per month but at the end it comes out that the people complaining about his power use never actually went to the utility company to find out how much he was actually using. At the end of the article we are told by a Gore spokesperson that he is buying "green power for $432 per month and he is in the process of installing solar panels to even cut that down. Maybe the thought is that most people won't read the whole article...

Oh Please - Al Gore is the least credible advocate of Concern for Global Warming...

If you are going to play politics - use him.

If you are sincere about the causes and mitigation of global warming - do some verifiable and comparable research with science - not schills..

Gore has found a schtick to stay in front of the public - what's he gonna do? He didn't even graduate from Law School...... be a lawyer? Or invent another internet???

Oh and let's compare the presidential "loser" George Bush's records for energy consumption with Al's.. and I guess the other house Bush lives in has to maintain "standards"....the peoples' house in Washington D.C.

Former Vice President Al Gore has been criticized for his rather large electric bills ($30,000 a year) at his home in Tennessee. (Link) What you might not have heard about is how environmentally friendly President George Bush's home is in Crawford Texas. Below is a partial reprint from the Chicago Tribune from April 29, 2001.

The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude.
Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

No, this is not the home of some eccentrically wealthy eco-freak trying to shame his fellow citizens into following the pristineness of his self-righteous example. And no, it is not the wilderness retreat of the Sierra Club or the Natural Resources Defense Council, a haven where tree-huggers plot political strategy.

This is President George W. Bush's "Texas White House" outside the small town of Crawford

[EPW Note: The President’s House in Crawford was designed to be eco-friendly.]

According to David Heymann, the house's architect and associate dean of the University of Texas architecture department, Heymann designed the house so that "every room has a relationship with something in the landscape that's different from the room next door. Each of the rooms feels like a slightly different place."

In a USA Today interview, Heymann said, "There's a great grove of oak trees to the west that protects it from the late afternoon sun. Then there is a view out to the north looking at hills, and to the east out over a lake, and the view to the south . . . out to beautiful hills."

Paul Hellyer has a unique solution to global warming and the gas shortage -- ask aliens what makes their saucers fly

Al Gore is the poster boy for global warming.
He sure is. Look at him.
There's a man who has never run for a bus.
All that gushing, honey love spread over him by other rich and famous people at the Oscars worries me, too. Watch for a new hole in the ozone 20 klicks above the Kodak Theatre.
Now the radio says Gore's mansion in Tennessee devours $30,000 a year in hydro and gas, at a clip 20 times the U.S. average.

http://ads5.canoe.ca/event.ng/Type=...010000025omt/direct/01/cqhkgol,bcRlkmibeeIqNv

If this emperor has no clothes, why should he? His thermostat is set on high.
So if not Al Gore, who will save us from drowning in glacial melt and keep beach resorts from Nunavut?
I find one answer in the lakefront office tower where my mom happens to hang her shingle.
Hon. Paul Hellyer. Remember him? Defence minister under Pearson. Liberal leadership contender. Trudeau's transport minister. The Belinda Stronach of his day. Grit. Tory. Grit. He even toyed with the NDP.
'OPEN YOUR EYES'
These days he dallies with another airy acronym. UFO.
"Open your eyes," he tells me. "Two days of research and you'll believe it too."
I will ask the United Airlines workers who saw a big, metallic Frisbee over Chicago's O'Hare airport last November.
I will not ask the air traffic controller who quipped: "To fly 7 million light years to O'Hare and then have to turn around and go home because your gate was occupied is simply unacceptable."
What have UFOs to do with global warming, or the GTA gas shortage?
They're the cure, says Hellyer, 83. Here's how he sees it:
When a UFO crashed in Roswell, N.M., in 1947 (oh, stop being such a cynic), it offered a techno treasure trove.
From that wreck, and 77 others, the military gleaned hardware that was out of this world.
The micro-chip, for instance. Bullet-proof vests. Fibre-optics. Tupperware. (Just kidding). Lasers. Star Wars weaponry.
"And particle guns."
What?
"High voltage. They fire something like controlled lightning."
Aha. Ray guns.
"Yes. The U.S. air force probably has them by now."
The big prize, though, is what makes those saucers fly.
Imagine a vehicle that does 30,000 km/h or hovers on a dime, regardless of whether Esso has any gas.
NO GREENHOUSE GAS
Best of all, no exhaust. No stench. No smog. No greenhouse gas. No ice cap melt. No drowned continents. No Al Gore?
The U.S. must have figured out the aliens' propulsion by now, says Hellyer.
Likely it is zero point energy, an idea floated by Einstein, which is infinite, pollution free and exists all around us.
Think of it as you queue for rationed gas.
The perfect fuel.
(Or is it? Why do flying saucers keep crashing?)
"That's why I've gone public. I want the Americans to tell us if they have it. Or how close they are.
"The people of the world have the right to know, too. To save this planet."
And if the Americans haven't figured it out?
"Instead of trying to shoot down those guys, we should invite them down to tell us what we need to know."
Which guys?
"The aliens. I'm told there's more than one species."
How do we get them to come?
"I'm told there have been face-to-face communications."
I wait for him to cackle or make monkey sounds or jump on the desk of his lakeview office. But Hellyer has unwavering, sane eyes, pale and clear. He is 6-foot-3 and every inch a gent.
He will be on hand next Wednesday for the Toronto screening of the UFO documentary Fastwalkers, so called for a military code name. (See exopoliticstoronto.com).
Hellyer has never seen a UFO. "I've never seen the Taj Mahal either, but I know it's real."
Maybe he is right. Maybe oil execs are not the only slimy green men in the energy business.
Beam me up, Scottie. Anything's better than a buck a litre.

I'd expect to hear nothing less since by definition the advocates against global warming from the unwashed masses are all nothing but hypocrites. Every damn one of them. Let's just set the whole thing on fire right now and get it over with. The worst that can happen is Jesus will have to cancel his 2:00.

Who are we hating tomorrow?

None of this can possibly be true, GWB doesn't have a degree in climatology, biology or anyotherology how could he be eco-friendly? Everyone knows that to be eco-friendly you have to be a left winger with a laundry list of honourary degrees. No man of average intelligence could possibly make these complex decisions.

This plight of Gores isn't new he has been doing it for quite some time and if he such a shill in your own words denounce the evidence given in his movie backed up by the vast majority of climatologists.

You can't, your opinion, like most others is based on pure bias and nothing more.

It's sad and above anyone with half a brain.

I repeat - again and again

GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE NOR SHOULD ANY ONE MAN, SCIENTIST, OR COUNTRY MAKE IT ONE.

It is an issue which concerns the future of the planet - not an issue which belongs to one nation - and we should all be working together to ascertain if there is in fact "warming" or a reversible climactic condition which may eventually right itself or turn in the oppositional direction...

Failed politicians such as Al Gore have nothing to offer the global community except celebrity and
a voice for the agenda driven people who refuse to consider any other conditions except what they insist as "truth"... and they will always offer politically biased rationale and blame along with their "truth"...

If people want to base the current condition (or future) of planet earth on this kind of spokesperson, they people deserve what they get...

Causing mass hysteria with a book, and giving homage to all his followers - even acknowledging Canada - does not solve anything but rather causes chaos and a political boilermaker to self-promote an egotistical agenda.

If you people thought for one minute Al Gore gave a rat's rear what happened to the planet earth other than to prove his prophesies realized.... you have merely fallen for another mass produced hype because the guy needs money and fame....he's found a way to get it.... and followers too....

Repeating the same old tripe doesn't make it true. Nor does trying to make Bush eco-friendly add any kind of credibility.

Excuse me Juan did you just call what I wrote tripe?

Global warming has nothing to do with Bush nor Gore or any other politician - it has to do with the nations of the world getting good data and working at solutions for mitigating whatever "warming" we are experience or will in the future....

That was insulting... I am allowed my opinion as you are.... try to keep your personal feelings out of this.

You might back off trying to get rid of people you don't agree with. There is very little "moderate" about your style on this forum.

Can this be anything more than just the global warming deniers taking cheap shots at a guy that has done so much good in the fight to have people start recognizing the facts? I don't think so. Sometimes I have to wonder what motivates these deniers. Stupidity for not understanding the facts or just plain negativity against anything positive we try to do to improve our prospects for the future. Surely they all can't be connected to oil companies by owning shares or other interest grouups.

This is the way politics is these days. Attack the messenger as a smokescreen. If Al Gore personally uses too much electricity, the entire discussion on climate change can be put to rest - it must be junk science not worth looking at.

I think curio has a point, though. It's rather foolish to keep using "green-ness" as a political bashing-stick, instead of a real issue. Oneupmanship (i'm greener than him so vote for me) and examples such as the above should be treated as reproachable, IMO. Global warming should be something ALL politicians work on together. Hardly worth expecting that though, eh? that'd be like asking flames to stand still

Good thing the present administration didn't create hysteria over global issues like terrorism, non existant WMD's, and Democrats with Purple Hearts.
