PEQUANNOCK, N.J. (AP) -- High school kids who illegally go drinking over the weekend could still find themselves in trouble at school a few days later.

A New Jersey school district is adopting a new policy that allows officials to randomly test students. The test they'll use can detect alcohol as much as three days after its consumption.

When students test positive, their parents will be told. They'll also get counseling, but won't be kicked off teams or kept from after-school activities.

The school superintendent believes it'll keep students from giving in to peer pressure to drink.

Officials acknowledge the tests can produce false positives after using things like mouthwash and Balsamic vinegar. But they say a student generally has to have one or two drinks for the test to register.

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey calls the tests an invasion of privacy.

A recent report from Newark NJ stated fully a 100 teachers in the city have quit already this school year complaining about unsafe teaching conditions. Newark itself has seen rising homicide rates and a spate of shootings, many near schools. If this is the environment in which students go to school and teachers teach, then maybe some 'testing' is overdue.

What the students do on their weekends is no business of the school board. I imagine the ACLU will be filing lawsuits as a result of this...

frivolous some of their lawsuits may be, they have had some success though when your pricacy is trampled on by corporations and various levels of government.

But the rub remains: why do the ACLU and its rich sponsors have the right to influence policy in our courts and lives? The ordinary Joe means nothing to the elitist organization. It has the money to pay for endless courtroom battles, battles that affect us and our communities. What ever happened happened to one man, one vote?

And well they should. My children are grown now, but if they were in that high school system I would very much resent such tests and would never give permission for same. The school is to teach children, not to condition and control their outside life. That is what parents are for.

Another example of the abdication of parents and their parental rights

Hollywood and MTV have had its way with the teens, and the parents are in fear of the pressure from their own children...

So if neither schools nor parents end up directing/influencing children who fills the void? And how are they accountable to us?

fair enough. If the school's that worried about it, why not test the kids? bloody parents ought to be teaching the kids about booze though, telling them it's not good for kids, and is bad for anyone in quantity.

That may very well be true, but the school has no business in the homelife of the children unless there is abuse going on.

Not the schools, that's for sure. they are notorious for crossing the lines in my opinion. Maybe, if all else fails, the Church.

Funny, but saddly so much truth in it. My wife is a school teacher in a Catholic grade school. They have been given very firm guidelines by the School Board about how to touch the children, and they are never to hug them! It's very sad because she teaches grade 1 and they are so open to embraces and hugging from adults, and so innocent.

My mother teaches grade primary and gets hugs from her students all the time. How very sad that some school boards are so rigid.
