A correctional officer in Massachusetts is being disciplined for screening the award-winning film Brokeback Mountain for inmates.

Diane Wiffin, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Correction, said this weekend that the disciplinary action was due to the film's "graphic nature of sexually explicit scenes."

She denied that the action was because of the film's subject matter:

I haven't seen the movie,

and although that movie won many awards, including best picture Academy award, I'm not sure a prison is the appropriate place to show it.

BrokeBack Mountain won Best Director, Best Picture went to Crash. Anyway, it's not like they don't have sex in prisons anyway, so how much worse can a movie do?

You are right about the best picture award. The site I went to had the two awards side by side and I grabbed the wrong one.

Given the stereotypical image we have of prisons; Weaker prisoners being forced by stronger prisoners to submit to homosexual acts, is a prison the appropriate place to show that movie? I have read that the movie is very well done, but I am not convinced a prison is the right place to show that movie.

I think if you see the movie you might actually change your mind. I've seen it and there was nothing really "graphic" in regards to homosexual acts that would arouse the inmates (I think).

If you're a movie buff I suggest you pickup Crash, I just saw it this past weekend, I found it rather moving.
