Jet Skids Off Chicago Runway Into Cars, Killing 6-Year-Old
A teaser:
CHICAGO, Dec. 8 (AP) - A jetliner trying to land in heavy snow skidded off a runway Thursday evening, crashed through a fence and slid into a busy street, hitting one vehicle and pinning another beneath it.
A 6-year-old boy in one of the vehicles was killed, the authorities said. About eight people hurt on the ground, and two passengers on the plane suffered minor injuries, said a spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Aviation, Wendy Abrams.
The jetliner, Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 from Baltimore, was landing at Midway International Airport with 98 passengers and five crew members when the 7:15 p.m. accident occurred. The airport reported 7 inches of snow Thursday, but Ms. Abrams said runway conditions at the time were acceptable. [end teaser]
Terrible thing to happen. That poor kid and his family. My condolences to them.
