Does History Repeat Itself?
By Cal Thomas, December 6th 2004, Fox News
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,140612,00.html

Holland is a perfect example of what happens when there is no governing moral standard. The Dutch have decriminalized most drugs and people smoke dope openly in venues set aside for the practice. Prostitutes display their wares like mannequins in department store windows. And now we have at least one hospital murdering already born babies because someone has decreed them unworthy of life.

And this:

And now we have the killing of newborns. All of this in a country where the Nazis murdered Ann Frank just because she was Jewish and therefore less than human.

Does history repeat? In Holland, apparently it does.

When I read this article, I was stunned. Yes, it's Fox News, but even for a commentary from Fox News I find this just so rude! Just because 1) you can not group one people together and accuse them of being Nazis and having "no governing moral standard" , but also because 2) Cal Thomas accuses the Dutch people of killing little babies because of something which has been severely exaggerated. This was what a member of the forum of the site clubvibes.com had to say about this:

With 2 minutes of research I was able to find that these babies who "don't measure up to an arbitrary standard" are actually babies born in great pain from incurable disease or extreme deformities. Now I'm not sure if I agree with this practice but FOX sure didn't help me have an informed opinion on the issue. The FOX article also fails to mention that since 2003 this option has been used a total of 4 times.

What is your opinion about this? People on the forum of clubvibes.com said to its Dutch members that the Dutch people should sue Cal Thomas for slander Good idea?

It sounds to me like Fox has decided that it's your turn to be a target, Rick. It was bound to happen...you don't have a Christian-biased government and actually have a reputation for being tolerant. Fox can't stand such things.

Well, the weird thing is that: our government is at the moment compromised out of a coalition of among others the Christian-Democrats and the (right-winged) Liberals; we have troops in Iraq (should that not make us friends?); we are taking our share in the "War On Terror"; and we have always been one of the closest US allies within the EU! I am just so shocked! *sarcasm alert* What will happen next? Should we fear an American invasion?

The US policy makers feel immensely insecure about their decisions on legal morality when other countries policies are different.

In other words, if they slag your country then they're policies MUST be better.

We've gone through the same thing when BC THOUGHT about decriminalization. Suddenly Vancouver was a Hedonistic Evil Socalistic Country of Depravity

I was also annoyed by something like this: 'The Dutch have decriminalized most drugs and people smoke dope openly in venues' Smoke dope openly in venues? Mister Thomas has either only been to Amsterdam, or either not even been to the Netherlands as a whole! The number of times I as a Dutchman has seen a person smoking pot openly in venues does not exceed 10, mostly in the large cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The drugs use among the Dutch is average compared to other EU countries. Countries like France and Denmark exceed us in that. I don't want to make this a discussion about pot, but he should first examine the country before he starts saying things like that.

You should see some of the things they say about Canada and Canadians. They generalise us and usually categorise us as hardcore socialists/communists who could never survive without the United States. On that point, it's funny they would say that about a country with higher standards of living with slightly higher grossing incomes (on average).
