Big Maple Leaf' $1-million coin stolen from Berlin museum

A huge $1-million Canadian gold coin, known as the Big Maple Leaf, was stolen from a museum in Berlin early Monday morning.

The coin, which is made of pure gold bullion and weighs 100 kg, had been on display at the Bode Museum in the German capital.

According to a police press release, authorities were first alerted to the theft just after 4 am, when a security guard called the police.

Police later found a ladder abandoned on the railway tracks near the local train station. The investigation continues.

On its website, Berlin State Museums describes itself as “a true paradise for all coin enthusiasts,” with 500,000 objects making it one of the largest coin collections in the world.

In a statement, Michael Eissenhauer, Director General of the Berlin State Museums said theft is the worst news a museum director can receive.

“We are shocked that the burglars overcame our security systems, which have been successfully protecting our objects for many years,” said Eissenhauer. “The perpetrators have done a great deal of damage and we are glad that no one was injured.”

The Royal Canadian Mint began selling the huge Big Maple Leaf coins in 2007, to promote its new line of 99999 pure 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins.

The coin has a hand-polished maple leaf design by artist and senior engraver Stan Witten on one side, and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by artist Susanna Blunt on the other.

And with a diameter of 53 cm and 3 cm thick, the Big Maple Leaf was certified the biggest coin in the world at the time by Guinness World Records.

So far, five Big Maple Leaf coins have been bought by investors from Canada and overseas, according to the Royal Canadian Mint website.

Although the coin has a face value of $1 million, due to the high purity of the gold used to make the coin, its actual value is reported to be up to $4.5 million.

Note – the release and statement were both in German, and have been translated roughly here.

What a quintessentially Canadian coin design. It is almost Zen-ful.

If that had been minted in the United States, there would be a screaming eagle on one face with arrows or lightning bolts in it's talons and the Statue of Liberty on the other face.

Wheelbarrow used to steal 100 kg gold coin

Berlin police say suspects used a wheelbarrow to make off with a 100-kilogram (221-pound) gold coin worth millions.
Police said Tuesday at least two burglars broke into the Bode Museum early Monday morning using a ladder to climb up to a window from elevated railway tracks running alongside the building.
The thieves grabbed the “Big Maple Leaf” coin, on loan to the museum’s coin collection, loaded it onto the wheelbarrow, then carted it out of the building and along the tracks across the Spree river before descending into a park on a rope and fleeing in a getaway car.
Police say the three-centimetre (1.2-inch) thick coin, with a diameter of 53 centimetres (20.9 inches) and worth some $4.5 million for the gold alone, was likely damaged in the theft.

BERLIN — German prosecutors have indicted four young men over the brazen theft of a 100-kilogram (221-pound) Canadian gold coin from a Berlin museum.
The “Big Maple Leaf” coin, worth several million dollars, was stolen from the Bode Museum in March 2017. Berlin prosecutors said Wednesday that they have filed charges of theft against four suspects at a juvenile court in the capital.
Three men, identified only as 21-year-old Wissam R., 20-year-old Ahmed R. and 23-year-old Wayci R., are accused of stealing the coin during the night using a wheelbarrow. The fourth suspect, 20-year-old Dennis W, worked as a guard at the museum for a private security firm and is accused of scouting out the scene.
Prosecutors believe that the suspects cut up the coin and sold the pieces.

I guess that was made before plastic was invented. What other crap has the taxpayer paid for without being consulted?

Notice the gold was not recovered so the real thieves got away and some 'FBI Informer types' were left holding an empty bag.

BERLIN — Four young men went on trial in Germany Thursday over the brazen theft of a 100-kilogram (221-pound) Canadian gold coin that disappeared from a Berlin museum two years ago.
Two brothers and their cousin, identified in German media as 24-year-old Wayci Remmo, 20-year-old Ahmed Remmo and 22-year-old Wissam Remmo, are accused of stealing the “Big Maple Leaf” coin from the Bode Museum in March 2017.
The fourth suspect, identified only as 20-year-old Dennis W., worked as a security guard at the museum, which is located in the heart of the German capital. He is accused of scouting out the scene of the crime.
The opening of the trial at Berlin’s district court drew intense media interest in Germany because of the Hollywood-style nature of the heist and their families’ alleged ties to organized crime.
Prosecutors believe that the Remmos smashed a protective case and then managed to lift the coin out of a museum window before fleeing along a rail track with their haul in a wheelbarrow. They are suspected of later cutting up the coin, valued at about 3.75 million euros ($4.33 million), and selling the pieces.
The men’s lawyers have denied the accusations levelled against their clients and accused prosecutors of presenting no evidence linking them to the theft.
If convicted, the men could face up to 10 years’ imprisonment for serious theft, though the three youngest defendants may be sentenced as juveniles because they were under 21 at the time of the crime.

Spam Link, the Japanese were very fond of buying silver coin. There was nothing special about those coins. They did cost quite a bit at first but quickly enough, valuable information is retrieved from their pages with great speed and accuracy.

Detailed introduction on prices of Spam Link to be bought (or sold), technical description on what makes money transfer work, manufacturers of in-house delivery system and sellers/buyers and near-to-real price/best price recommendations

Could not think what section topic was more important than this one? Let's move on to buyeums!

The good news is it's one million dollars Canadian, which at today's exchange rates is about a buck-fifty in real money.
The irony is, at 100kg’s…at the current price of gold….that coin contained (past tense) $7,343,026.00 of material….and was worth $1,000,000,.00 as currency
(Even when it was minted, the gold was worth 2.42 million for this 1 million dollar coin).

I’m doubting this coin stayed as a coin for long after it went missing….
