Agreed
Whether watching the cells to prevent problems or as a reliable recorder of events.
IMHO:
It's just that they seem to malfunction during these types of incidents.
To be fair though, its possible she was arrested while abusing something which killed her, or she was injured prior, but the cops are still responsible for stowing a person of diminished capacity.

She was recently separated, possibly lost her kids, and also may have fit the profile of someone who might be suicidal. It would be ironic and sad if the cops jailed her to protect her from herself.

The kids also have to grow up with " mum died in jail".

Not sure about Canada but here when a person is under risk of hurting themselves they are put under "LOS". ~Line of Sight~. They are monitored intensely to prevent the possibility.

If you read the article while she may have been in police custody she was in a hospital when she died. Actually the second hospital. Meaning she was in doctors care for quite a few hours before dying.

Your life depends on hundreds of different tools every day. What's so special about a camera?
When any tool is defective, or used improperly there are possible liabilities
When the tools you rely on to stay alive are the cops and they fail, then the camera record is there to show a record which will help save the next person in trouble...
( we pay them to serve and protect...)
might even be you

One of the questions here will certainly be are the cops or the system in some way responsible or not AGAIN
We have already lost a lot of natives to the system up here, and that needs to change.

Certainly the question will be why did she have to go to the hospital

best to get the story out first and leave it murky and perhaps police-ey related...we don't know and won't know for awhile. could just have well been alcohol poisoning like other kids have died from.

all in good time. then we'll know.

So much drug & alcohol abuse among natives in/around Port Alberni a person sees it on the street all the time driving through.

Yep and that is a huge reason in itself for greater vigilance. Gone are the days when we used to dismiss these unfortunate events with "Serves them right"!
