A man who sent drunken text messages claiming Saskatoon police had dropped him outside Saskatoon will serve time behind bars for the lie, which spawned a massive investigation by a police force that still has to grapple with its history of “starlight tours.”
Dustin Keegan Eagle, 28, was sentenced Monday in Saskatoon provincial court to four months in jail, after pleading guilty to mischief for filing a false complaint.
Eagle’s false report happened around the same time as another case of similar allegations, but Eagle’s story was never publicized and it’s not clear if the two cases are related.
On Jan. 22, 2013, Drayton Bull’s stepmother called police and said Bull, 19, had been taken outside the city and dropped off. Police never received a formal complaint, but a Facebook post by a family member and subsequent media coverage prompted the police to ask the Saskatchewan Public Complaints Commission to investigate Bull’s claim. The commission later reported it found no evidence Bull’s claim was true.
Eagle texted family members on Jan. 23, 2013, alleging police had driven him outside the city, taken his shoes and his jacket and left him to walk home. Eagle was actually on a Dakota Dunes shuttle bus when he sent the texts, and was never in police custody that night.
