Kerrie Orozco was shot and killed in the line of duty on what was supposed to be her last day of work before she took time off to care for her newborn daughter.
"Officer down!" a cop can be heard on the dispatch recording the Omaha Police Department released Thursday. "Get a squad here now!"
Orozco, 29, had given birth prematurely in February. Baby Olivia Ruth was released from hospital Thursday, the day after her mom took a fatal shot just above her bulletproof vest.
More than 20 cops accompanied her to the hospital, but a trauma team was unable to save her.
"Officer Kerrie Orozco gave her life for all of us in her service to the Omaha Police Department," Mayor Jean Stothert said a statement.
Also dead is Orozco's suspected shooter, Marcus D. Wheeler, 26, a father himself.
A convicted drug dealer wanted for a non-fatal 2014 shooting, cops painted Wheeler as a dangerous gang member, though his family insists otherwise.
Orozco and other officers were pursuing Wheeler when he opened fire on police, the department said. Police returned gunfire.
"I feel like this is a big puzzle and a lot of pieces have been left out by our police department," Andrea Kiner, Wheeler's mom, told KMTV Action News. She expressed condolences for the new mom killed on duty, but said: "My son was not violent and he was not a part of a gang."
Tributes have been pouring in for Orozco from her fellow officers.
"She was a friend, a popular officer," Chief Todd Schamderer told ABC News. "I just can't even imagine that this has happened."

It is tragic but she knew she 'may' die in the line of duty as a cop.

We don't mourn firemen and utility electricians who die in the line of duty.

Petros,

No we don't. I don't remember any funeral for firemen or utility electricians and I am regular consumer of news.

If I am a firemen, I know there is inherent risk of dying in the line of duty. If am unarmed citizen, I don't expect to be shot to death by a cop. So, a death of an unarmed civilian is far more shocking than a death of a cop.

You are consuming news but have NEVER heard of a firefighter funeral?

Try looking. They will travel from world wide to attend. They're huge.

A 4000lb weapon (vehicle) in a high speed chase is a threat to public safety. A car can do more damage than a bomb.

Maybe. Maybe not. Without knowing the details I can't, neither can you, say a 4000 lb vehicle is a public safety threat.

But my point remains. When you sign up to be a cop or a firefighter or a miner or construction worker for the matter, you know, well ahead, that you may lose life or limp in the course of doing your job. So, you can't turn around and ask for special consideration when a highly probably risk materializes. Do we build memorials for miners, construction workers, plumbers, sewer workers and electricians who died in the line of duty? If not, why not?
