The cattlemen and the government are against it. Many of the farm groups
are as well. The reason is many fear a nationalistic approach to purchasing
I am also concerned but my position is in favor of labeling
Even more I am in favor of labeling GMO products. Again agriculture is split
on the issue. I don't concern myself with grains and oil seeds but fruit and
vegetables should be labeled to meet consumer issues.
Most Canadians want fruit and vegetables labeled GMO or non GMO.
My issue is not with the science its with the economics. We had a backlash
in the tree fruit industry before that cost our farmers millions that was two
decades ago.
If consumers want choice labeling is the only distinction they can chose from.
Country of origin labeling also allows me to not buy food stuff from China
which I will not do

It is about the marketplace and fruit is something people do not want
with GMO period. The growers are not in favor either. You are right
corn is already headed that way. I see a great problem coming in the
near future on this issue. Label it simple give consumers the choice.

Heading? There is no such thing as wild corn.

Corn is 100% reliant on humans. Has been for thousands of years. There is nothing natural about it.

Well its about what the consumer wants and the funny thing is most don't care
about the science or anything else. They don't want GMO in their food supply.
I listen carefully to see whether folks are coming from. It is one thing to be lobbied
by specific pressure groups or ordinary citizens.
A couple of years ago in cooperation with other province's tree fruit farmers we
did a full survey Over seventy-six percent don't want GMO product in fruit and
vegetables. They are not asking it be removed they are saying label it and give
us Consumer Choice. Clearly if producers and packers are believe the
customer is right they will label it to define choice. If Canadian producers can't
produce quality without GMO intervention then import non GMO products to
satisfy customer demand.
Surely we should not be lying to consumers. Its time for choice by labeling.
I wonder what will happen when a new government comes to power and the
label will give consumers the oversight they are entitled to.

We have no non-GMO foods unless yer foraging in the woods for berries and shrooms and eating wild game.
