Man, 53, faces charges after lawnmower chase: police

A 53-year-old Howick, Ont. man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly evaded police on his John Deere lawnmower and failed to provide a breathalyzer sample.

Huron County Ontario Provincial Police say an officer came across a large lawnmower travelling northbound on Gorrie Line in the township of Howick at about 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The officer allegedly recognized the driver and knew that he was prohibited from driving, but just as the officer approached the driver he veered off the roadway into a freshly plowed field, according to a release.

Police say the officer was able to catch up to the driver and ordered him off of the lawnmower, before detecting an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath.

The driver then allegedly refused to provide a roadside breathalyzer sample and he was arrested and taken into police custody where it was discovered he had a court order that prohibited him from consuming alcohol, according to the release.

Murray Thornton, 53, faces numerous charges including driving while disqualified, refusing to provide a breath sample and failing to comply with an undertaking.

His licence was suspended for 90 days, his lawnmower was impounded for 45 days and he is scheduled to appear in court on June 15 in Goderich, Ont.
