Just in time for Mother's Day, a Kentucky sheriff's detective went to a wedding, dropped his gun and accidentally shot his ma, authorities said.
Detective Cory Golightly of the McCracken County Sheriff's Department was, for some reason, wearing a holster and a gun at a marriage ceremony in the Bardwell Baptist Church in a neighboring county
He was not on the clock and the weapon was not his duty gun, said Sheriff Jon Hayden, according to WPSD-TV.
Church pianist Jeanine King had just finished playing and the ceremony was over when she heard a loud bang.
My initial reaction was 'Oh, my goodness. Could that possibly be a gun?' Then my next thought was, 'Gosh, who's in the church with a gun?"
That would be Golightly, according to witnesses.
Custodian Mike Collins, who's also a local firefighter, said he rushed into the foyer to see what happened, as did everyone else. Golightly had been adjusting his jacket when the gun and the holster fell on the floor, causing the weapon to discharge.
The bullet hit Golightly's mother.
"He was so calm," said King. "He said, 'Mom, breathe and be calm. Be calm.'''
Golightly is on paid leave while the shooting is being investigated. His mother is hospitalized in stable condition, the station reported.
