Cardinal steps down over sexual impropriety allegations, a first since 1927

By Michelle Boorstein March 20

The Vatican announced Friday that a Scottish cardinal accused of sexual misconduct will lose all the rights and privileges of that high office following his resignation — the first time a cardinal has resigned since the 1920s.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien was Britain’s senior Catholic cleric until he stepped down from his regular duties in 2013 after allegations surfaced that he hadmade sexual advances to a number of priests. On Friday, the Vatican announced that O’Brien would be a cardinal in name only, won’t be allowed to participate in public religious events or have the privileges that cardinals do, such as voting for pope. However, O’Brien will retain the title of cardinal.

O’Brien, a vocal opponent of gay rights, stepped down as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh when reports of his sexual advances and affairs emerged in late February; a week later he apologized and admitted that “there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal.”
what were you just saying about this Cliffy?

While the pope’s homily focused on the temptations of money, “careerism” and “vanity,” the dual developments reflected Francis’ well-known disdain for clericalism, and prompted speculation that the new pope might take a harder line against misbehaving bishops.

never heard of a vestment press...wow they're over a thousand pounds each...

So much for change. This guy should be drummed out of the church instead
he can keep his robes and he can have a title and he can't vote for the Pope.
This sounds worse than the behavior of players in the NFL. The church is
going to hell in a hand basket here

no it already went there, it is slowly coming back

a few years ago this never would have made news, it would have been swept under the carpet and forgotten about

One of the lines Vatican 2 that actually clarified rather than muddled the role of the Church in the modern era was that the "Church of Christ subsists in its entirety in the Roman Catholic Church (paraph.)... from the previous "the Church of Christ IS the Catholic Church".. which acknowledges that a random, chaotic, human elements exist within its structure that continuously disrupts its mission.

O'Brien's case nothing new, in fact he's not the first cardinal in living memory to be 'retired' for sexual impropriety, homosexual and otherwise, although its usually done more quietly. In fact, its small change compared to previous scandals at the top of the Church.. like the Borgia Pope, Alexander VI, with his murders and orgies and slews of illegitimate offspring. The trick is to separate the wheat from the chaff in the RCC.

So is that a cardinal sin?

There are Caridinal Virtues.. Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice.

And there are Deadly Sins.. Pride, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, Envy, Anger, Lust.

It's seems the good Cardinal might have failed to meet the expectations of the first.. and stepped over line of the second, especially the last.
