Austin, Texas, Businesses Angry Over 'Exclusively for White People' Stickers


Businesses and officials in Austin, Texas, want to identify the culprit behind offensive stickers plastered on at least six shops this week.

The labels, slapped on various storefronts, say: "Exclusively for white people. Maximum of 5 colored customers, colored BOH (Back of House) staff accepted."

Austin Mayor Steve Adler condemned the stickers Wednesday. The stickers feature an unauthorized use of the city's logo and a claim that the offensive statement is endorsed by officials.

"This is an appalling and offensive display of ignorance in our city," Adler said in a statement Wednesday. "Austin condemns this type of hurtful behavior. Our city is a place where respect for all people is a part of our spirit and soul."

The stickers were first noticed between midnight and 7 a.m. Wednesday in East Austin, a historically black neighborhood that is home to a growing community of artists.

The owner of Sugar Mama's Bakeshop told NBC affiliate KXAN that the stickers may be an attempt at satire or a statement on gentrification in the neighborhood. But "as a multiracial family with a multiracial staff, there's nothing funny about this," Olivia Guerra O'Neal said.

"It's sick, and its cowardly message can be read many ways, none of them positive," O'Neal added. "We are disgusted by this act of vandalism and cowardice."

A taco eatery, grocery store and bike shop were also among the targeted businesses. City officials and police said they are monitoring the situation.



"Sure, it's offensive, but it's also just a sticker," Sarah Goeth, the owner of Windmill Bicycles, told KXAN. "It's easy to take down. I've got a business to run."

Employees at several Texan businesses have found stickers saying "exclusively for white people" placed on their windows, sparking an investigation into their origin and condemnation from the mayor.


Austin Mayor Steve Adler said the stickers discovered Wednesday morning were "an appalling and offensive display of ignorance in our city."


The stickers also say "Maximum of 5 colored customers / colored BOH staff accepted," apparently referring to the "back of house" operations at a restaurant.


They featured a city of Austin logo and claimed to be "sponsored by the City of Austin Contemporary Partition and Restoration Program," though no such program exists.


The city has said the use of its logo was unauthorised.

Austin is one of the fastest-growing cities in the US and is confronting increasing questions about economic and racial segregation as real estate prices skyrocket around its urban core.


Raul Alvarez, board president for the East Austin Conservancy, said the stickers are likely in response to gentrification in the area on Austin's east side.


"I certainly share the concerns about the history and culture and affordability that's being lost because of the rapid development, but our organization tends to focus on what it is we can do to preserve what makes East Austin unique and not focus on strategies that divide the community," he told the Austin American-Statesman newspaper.

Several business owners and employees said the stickers unnerved them.


April Jensen, who works at the Sugar Mama's Bakeshop, told the newspaper "it kind of hurt" when she read the sticker.


"I don't really understand the message behind it," said Jensen, who is African-American. "All types of customers come in here."


Bryce Bencivengo, spokesman for the city of Austin, tells the San Antonio Express-News that city officials along with the Austin police are investigating the stickers' origin.


Nelson Linder, president of Austin NAACP, called the stickers "absolutely stupid."


"Don't put signs like that on people's doors because you want to bring attention to your plight," he said.

It's idiotic. They plastered them everywhere so it's not an "intimidation" tactic. Could easily be a white group or black group looking to stir up sh!t but and this is the most likely, it could be a group of low intelligence losers with nothing better to do than aggravate others....much like the internet troll.

I'd say, rip 'em off, clean it up, proclaim them for the losers that they are and carry on carrying on. Unfortunately we really can't do much about other people's stupidity.

Racism is always on simmer, it never goes off simmer, and probably won't until enough people say enough times that it isn't an issue. And I'm speaking generally of course, throughout society, there will always be individual incidents of racism, or sexism, or ageism, etc.

I did up a Terriyaki chicken stir fry with brown rice, locally grown organic carrots, mushrooms sauteed in bacon fat, onions, red pepper and corn.
