Suspect arrested after RCMP officer shot in Kamloops, B.C.
A suspect has been arrested in Kamloops, B.C., after an RCMP officer was shot during a routine traffic stop early Wednesday morning.
Following a day-long manhunt, police said Wednesday evening that a 36-year-old male was arrested without incident outside a residence. The suspect sustained “serious injury,” the province’s Independent Investigations Office tweeted Wednesday. More details were expected later Wednesday night.
The suspect’s name was not released, as charges had yet to be laid, Supt. Brad Mueller told a news conference.
“At this point in time, our investigation is ongoing,” Mueller said, adding “Our information leads us to believe that we have a suspect in custody that was involved in the incident.”
Mueller said the suspect is known to police.
The RCMP officer, identified as Cpl. Jean Michaud, remained in hospital in Kamloops in critical but stable condition after gunfire broke out overnight.
Michaud was attempting to stop a car at around 2:45 a.m. when a suspect opened fire and hit him, Mueller said earlier Wednesday.
A second RCMP officer returned fire and the vehicle drove away, police said.
The 40-year-old father of two and 13-year RCMP veteran was in full uniform and wearing a bulletproof vest at the time, Mueller said. He was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleague, his wife, his two young children and the rest of his family," Mueller said.
Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney said at the start of a House of Commons committee hearing on Wednesday that the officers were performing the vehicle stop as “part of an ongoing operation investigating organized crime.”
Blaney said he hopes the RCMP officer recovers from his injuries “as soon as possible.”
He added the shooting reminds Canadians of the dangers frontline officers face. “It certainly reminds us to remain prudent,” Blaney said.
RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said earlier in the day that police were looking for a four-door white 1998 Chrysler Intrepid with the B.C. licence plate AF7 65A.
"We consider anyone associated with that vehicle or this incident to be armed and dangerous," Mueller said.
