Calgary police ID man wanted in poppy box thefts
Police have identified a man suspected in the theft of six poppy fund boxes in Calgary this month.
Dwayne Shane Soroka, 31, is also wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for unrelated parole violations while serving three years for a slew of theft and assault-related crimes.
And the theft of poppy fund boxes in Calgary didn’t stop on the eve of Remembrance Day with two incidents in the downtown core on Monday,
Soroka is suspected of taking poppy donations at a location in Eau Claire on Monday, say police.
In the other theft, during Monday’s breakfast rush at the Tim Horton’s at 614 6 Ave. S.W., a man made off with the collection container holding $40-$50, said staffer Corrina Wong.
“It would be awesome if he was caught — it’s very disturbing,” said Wong, adding the theft was captured on a restaurant video camera.
But she said the crime brought out the best in another Calgarian.
“A guy who was here when it happened gave $25 to the fund,” said Wong.
Monday’s thefts brought the number of poppy fund heists in Calgary this month to at least 14.
The acts are a disgraceful slap in the face to veterans and society, said Staff Sgt. Travis Baker.
“People are donating to a good cause and when somebody steals from veterans, it’s reprehensible,” said Baker.
“It’s a crime of opportunity given the time of year but what bothers me is who they’re victimizing.”
Money collected by the poppy campaign is used to make life better for destitute or ailing military veterans.
Soroka has a string of 40 convictions in the past 11 years and was freed on statutory release in Edmonton in September, 2013.
He was serving time on two counts of break and enter, two counts of theft under, assault, and possession of a stolen credit card.
He failed to report to a halfway house as ordered and has been on the lam since.
To steal poppy funds, Soroka usually distracts retail staff by pointing to a product of false interest, then “takes the case, puts it in his coat and exits,” said Baker.
He’s described as white, 6-ft., 2-in tall, 220 lbs with a clean shaven, bald head.
