Northern Ontario,
And the politically correct are caving in again...............

For two centuries it has stood tall and proud as a British military tradition.

But the bearskin could be about to be toppled after protests from animal rights activists.

The Ministry of Defence is trying to find a fake fur replacement after being inundated with complaints that the caps are a symbol of animal cruelty.

The bearskins, up to 16in tall and weighing around two pounds, are worn by the Grenadier, Welsh, Irish, Scots and Coldstream Guards.

They are synonymous with the pomp and splendour of events such as the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and the Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Made from the pelts of culled Canadian black bear, the material is warm and water resistant, retaining its distinctive shape no matter the weather.

The pelts to make the bearskin hats come from bears that are slaughtered by the Inuit in the frozen wastes of Canada in a government programme to keep numbers under control.

The Grenadier Guards were the first British regiment to wear bearskin hats in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo and the action which gave them their name.

Belgian soldiers also wear them.

ah good news for a change.

The bears are being slaughtered anyway by the Inuit as part of a Canadian government initiative to cut down numbers. The bears aren't being killed especially for their pelts.

So you're an uninformed troll as well as a stupid one.

Inuit hunt POLAR bears. They are protected and even Inuit are only allowed a small number per year. They are white, by the way.

The reason they are protected is that the sea ice has been melting, and some bears are having a hard time finding food. Their numbers are dwindling, but not due to over hunting.

The black bear pelt might be used for your stupid ****ing hats, but they don't live where the Inuit do.

We could use a black bear kill because their numbers are rising, due to one of our past politicos cancelling a spring bear hunt.

But that would make too much sense, so it won't happen; just like you obtaining some intelligence will never occur.

Next time you're caught smearing your feces on the wall and licking your fingers tell them the Inuit made you do it..........idiot.

I'm not uninformed. You are. I did my research before I posted. You didn't. The bearskin hats come from bears that Canadian Inuit have killed as part of a government initiative to cut down numbers. Bears aren't being killed just to make bearskin hats.

It's amazing how many things Canada provides to the British military that the Brits don't have themselves. Bearskins, courage, professionalism, respect for the law of war, hardware and software for the CGI Navy, to name just a few.

We can't use British bears for bearskin hats, because they don't exist. We have to import bear pelt from elsewhere.
Thank you for clarifying. It's sometimes difficult to figure out what you're talking about.

You could import the bears, and kill them yourselves.

The one thing you must never do is change 200-year-old kit. Why, where would the modern British army be without its red coats, shakoes, and Brown Bess muskets?

Why do that when we can just import the bear fur from bears that have been killed as part of a government initiative to cull numbers? We're engaging in badger culls in Britain at the moment. If soldiers wore badger skin hats we could easily get them. As it is they wear bearskin hats.

Correct. Ceremony and tradition is the thing the British do better than everyone else.
