It was bad enough that the alleged rape took place in the sanctity of a mosque and that the accused man was a mullah who invoked the familiar defence that it had been consensual sex.
But the victim was only 10 years old. And there was more: The authorities said her family members openly planned to carry out an honour killing in the case – against the young girl. The mullah offered to marry his victim instead.
This past week, the awful matter became even worse. On Tuesday, local policemen removed the girl from the shelter that had given her refuge and returned her to her family, despite complaints from women’s activists that she was likely to be killed.
The case has broader repercussions. The head of the Women for Afghan Women shelter here where the girl took refuge, Dr. Hassina Sarwari, was at one point driven into hiding by death threats from the girl’s family and other mullahs, who sought to play down the crime by arguing the girl was much older than 10. One militia commander sent Sarwari threatening texts and an ultimatum to return the girl to her family. The doctor said she now wanted to flee Afghanistan.
The head of the women’s affairs office in Kunduz, Nederah Geyah, who actively campaigned to have the young girl protected from her family and the mullah prosecuted, resigned May 21 and moved to another part of the country.
The case itself would just be an aberrant atrocity, except that the resulting support for the mullah, and for the girl’s family and its honour killing plans, have become emblematic of a broader failure to help Afghan women who have been victims of violence.

If you read further it says that the progress made when we were there is reverting back to the past. When will people (governments) learn that you can change yourself but not anyone else and even less a whole country.

Good thing Christian clerics never rape kids.

The families of the victim don't end up killing them if it's a Christian cleric that did the heinous deed. So, there's a HUGE difference, for one.

One thing that makes this even sadder (hard to do when a 10 year old girl is likely to be murdered ((certainly nothing "honourable" about that killing)) for a piece of ****'s actions) is that we lost many soldiers over there for what looks to be nothing. Any headway that was made is pretty much going away.

you can't change people's hearts through war or wipe away the brain washing....I don't know how we help, even in this country the women have to fight to be equal but here they have the support of other women and the law (sort of)

good thing our society doesn't condone it (mostly)

and supports the victim (mostly)

Normal people would kill the preacher. Slowly. That would be an hounor killing.
a normal family would be tempted yes....but it's a mullah...in their eyes, kind of like killing god

here's where other mullah's should step up and speak out

if they are, it has not been fairly reported

More probably waiting their turn with the girl.

it is appalling how someone could look at their little 10 year old child and think she is to blame for what a man of god did

it is beyond my understanding how that mind set works

at some point, the heart must override the conditioning and for some it does, I don't understand what makes that difference

if you take ten people and brainwash them all why does one suddenly step forward and say, no this is wrong knowing they may die for it...how does that happen?

Heavens, it is a good thing we in the West are not brainwashed into accepting absurd religious or political claims. Must be our guardian angels working overtime.

Our society not condoning it is a VERY recent development.

Maybe countries could open immigration for women and children who want to leave and then once those who want to leave have left a giant dome or travel restrictions can be placed over the country and they can fight themselves into extinction.
