TORONTO - The “lower half” of a newborn was found in a North York park Monday morning, Toronto Police say.
Det. Nick Nei, of 31 Division, said the remains found inside Heathrow Park, in the Jane St. and Wilson Ave. area, are that of a baby less than a month old, and were discovered by city workers in water in a storm drain just after 9 a.m.
Ontario’s coroner is on the scene, Nei said.
Police spokesman Cost. Victor Kwong said that if the death is deemed a murder, homicide investigators will take over the case.
“What I’m hearing is that it is half of a child … the lower half,” Kwong said.
Nei told media gathered at the scene that investigators will be looking to the public for help.
“Look around your friends and neighbours, people you may know, people you may have come across (who) may have been pregnant or had a child and you don’t see that child or you haven’t seen that child yet,” said Nei, who urged anyone with information to contact 31 Division.
Nei said multiple drain lines feed into the drain where the remains were found, and that police will have to determine where the remains have come from. He also said the last time that drain was cleaned was two weeks ago and that the child’s remains could have been there since then.
Nei could not confirm the gender, ethnicity or the exact age of the child.
According to the City of Toronto, Heathrow Park is a 2.2-hectare park that features two playgrounds, a splash pad, a walking path, and “open green space.”

I hope that this was not a homicide. :( if the remains had not been found would it have eventually ended up in the ocean?

Jeez, how horrible. Likely a homicide if no-one reported a missing baby :( How sad! 9 months (10 actually) of nurturing a child in the womb only to lose (or discard) it after 1 month. :(
