Former New York City Mayor Voices Frustration With Growing Hardheadedness, Blames Liberals
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg took sharp aim Thursday at what he called a growing intolerance of dissenting views on college campuses, while urging a crowd at Harvard University to fight fiercely for a diversity of opinions.
"Attempting to restrict my freedom in ways you would not restrict your own leads only to injustice," Mr. Bloomberg said, addressing thousands at an alumni event during Harvard's 363rd commencement day. "That's true in cities and true at universities, where the forces of oppression appear to be stronger now than at any time since the 1950s."
Student protests have upended graduation addresses at many institutions this year. No speakers have withdrawn from engagements at Harvard this season, but those who have withdrawn elsewhere include former National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice at Rutgers University, and <a class="icon none" href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20140512-715787.html" target="_new">Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, at Smith College.
