Hither and yon
This one is bound to make a few hater heads explode.

Under the Harper Government the Canadian middle class has become the richest in the world.

A 35-year study performed by the New York Times in conjunction with European data collection agency the LIS group confirmed that the Conservative Government of Canada has created the world’s richest middle class.

Quote” Canada is tied with Britain for the most growth in middle-class earnings since 2000, and has now pulled ahead of the U.S. to boast the wealthiest middle class in the world".

Unfortunately for the Canadian upper class or rich classes they did not do as well. Canadian rich remain poorer than the rich from the USA and other nations.

And Justin Trudeau was previously trumpeting his campaign promise to “help the Canadian middle class”.
Sorry Justin…..jobs done.
Thanks anyway.

well I'm not rich by any standards probably not really middle class...maybe lower middle now, nothing like some of my friends and my income has dropped significantly since I changed jobs... However, I can easily live on a contract basis and only likely work 9 or 10 months of the year and still do okay.

then again, I'm not greedy and am easily content

of course there's always room for more but I wouldn't think the article is far wrong

I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE!!

No surprise. Canada not only has a better economy, but has a team spirit in which everyone gets a decent education and health care. If you want to call that "socialism" …fine.

My income is probably in the middle class range and I do okay. I've been at the same company for 34 years though so that helps. Good pension plan, health insurance. But I'd have to say it's been the case for me personally since before Harper. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones.

My issue is the incredible amount of taxes I pay. I don't have an issue with paying taxes, but what i pay versus what services I get is ridiculous.

or knowing your taxes are going to pay for politicians and their spouces vacations? or for $25,000 computers for special rooms?

I have trouble accepting that my tax dollars are being spent on unneccesary things. My company does not pay for my family to travel with me. They want to come, they pay. If I don't want to spend so much time away from my family then I should find another job...

The American middle class has shrunk during the Obama presidency.

The 'working class' or middle has been shrinking for over 30 years and yes, Obama could have changed the direction but he has failed and gone along with the status quo .........

During the 2012 presidential election, Republican nominee Mitt Romney regularly liked to joke that President Obama wanted the US economy to look "more like Europe". In the context of modern American politics, few insults are more stinging. To be European is to be somehow effeminate, irresolute and, perhaps worst of all, socialist. It's the opposite of the "rugged individualism" and "exceptional nature" of the uniquely American experiment in self-government.

But, as a sobering New York Times article last week made clear, America could have a lot to learn by looking to Europe. According to the New York Times, the American middle class – the linchpin of the country's phenomenal postwar economic growth – can no longer call itself the richest in the world. "While the wealthiest Americans are outpacing many of their global peers," says the NYT, "across the lower- and middle-income tiers, citizens of other advanced countries have received considerably larger raises over the last three decades." America's poorest citizens lag behind their European counterparts; 35 years ago, the opposite was true

In the years after the Second World War, America was defined by an unprecedented period of economic prosperity. Jobs were plentiful and well-paying, with generous health and retirement benefits. New creature comforts, from refrigerators and washing machines to televisions and cars, were suddenly available. Americans became homeowners and eventually, if they were lucky, suburbanites.

Perhaps most important, those at the bottom of the economic ladder shared in the bounty as much as those at the top.

Life back then was never as idyllic as nostalgic portrayals of postwar America would suggest (this was particularly true if you were a minority or a woman). But it was also true that Americans enjoyed the type of economic security that current generations can only dream of.

Part of the reason was that they had political leaders who recognised that the federal government could not just sit on the sidelines.

From the emergency measures of the New Deal, which laid the foundation for the modern welfare state, to the vast ambitions of the Great Society, the government provided support for the aged, healthcare for the poor, job security for workers, good schools for the nation's young people and invested in science and infrastructure projects that created new economic opportunities.

By the 70s, however, as the postwar economic boom began to deflate, so, too, did the idea that government had a role to play in stewarding the economy or protecting workers from the vicissitudes of the free market. Instead, as a conservative anti-government populism emerged out of the perceived "liberal" excesses of the 60s, a new political ethos came to the fore. It was one promoted by Republicans (if occasionally articulated and endorsed by Democrats). Government was no longer a friend to the working man – it was a malignant force transferring his hard-earned tax dollars to the poor and minorities.

Down here we think people create their own riches.

Economic class is a Marxist construct. I believe All Canadian citizens are Canadian citizens; dividing us into groups is a negative approach to solving problems.

Well, it certainly pre-dates Marx. Your point, however, is well taken. Statistics are valuable in analyzing and resolving problems, but all too often they are simply used to divide (and conquer). The tendency to divide any available population into "us" and "them" is perhaps humanity's most destructive trait.

And if you disagree, you're one of "them."

Altogether too much concern about this "class" sh*t. Why do we have to fit certain criteria that qualifies us for a certain class? Why can't be just "be" and forget this nonsense?
