Saskatchewan farmer caught on video confronting trespassing snowmobilers

with a shotgun

I confess I kind of like Deryl Ring. For one thing, his Facebook page shows he owns a bullmastiff and we've had three of the big, loveable brutes.

For another, he's not afraid to stand up for himself.

But my admiration pretty much stops there. Because Mr. Ring decided the way to confront a couple of snowmobilers who apparently trespassed on his land was to force them to stop at gunpoint, then slap one of them around.

Ring, a Saskatchewan alpaca farmer, is the star of a video shown by CBC News. It was shot by a helmet-mounted camera worn by one of the offending snowmobilers.

Jeff Smerechanski said he and his camera-toting companion inadvertently turned into Ring's property south of Saskatoon last month.

Looks a lot like a road where this redneck ******* chose to assert his authority, kicking the expensive machine and slapping the guy in the head, in an unprovoked attack, not even his property. Should have had the riot gun shoved up his *** !

the guy lost his cool and with a gun in his hand... not exactly a rational approach to the problem, luckily for all it did not escalate further

Defending your property is NOT "vigilante justice".

If the guy with the shotgun only know how fast that situation could have changed ... he'd have shot the machine....

Defending it with lethal force, however, is "assault with a deadly weapon."

Just having the gun could get him "brandishing"

Sledding on farmland f-cks it up.

There are enough groomed and well marked trails to sled on in SK to equal snowmobiling to the moon and the best on the planet.

To the Libs it is as well as violating the trespasser's rights.

The libs and the law. The principle that removing trespassers is only permissible if it can be done without a breach of the peace goes back to the Middle Ages.

Forensic evidence is usually more reliable, popular opinion to the contrary notwithstanding.

Forensic evidence requires evidence. The local knows the lay of the land ... and has friends

What were the laws you agreed to when you took the snowmobile endorsement test on your drivers license and registered and insured your sled?

Don't see how that's relevant. The fact that the snowmobilers may be violating the law does not give you the right to shoot them.

Did he shoot them? Since they were agitating his livestock he has the right to use whatever means it requires to elimate the risk to his livelihood.

One of the requirements of legally operating a sled means you agreed to stay on trails and off private land without expressed consent.

You're sure a sh-tty lawyer. I'd never hihire you.
