Shirley Temple Black was a role model for many of my generation. She lit up the movie screens and brought joy to so many with her wonderful acting ability even at a very young age. She went on to become a great ambassador for the UN. A life well lived.

I enjoyed all of her movies when I was a little kid. While she indeed was a great actress, she was an even more wonderful human being. Just today I was at the local bookmobile and was told this story by my librarian:

Her best friend was in the Peace Corps and did volunteer work overseas. Mrs Black was working for the UN at that time and would give parties to the volunteers wherever she went - she gave everyone photos, autographs, go to each table, and speak to each and everyone of the volunteers. She made everyone of them feel as if they were her special friend. My librarian's friend said she would never forget the experience as long as she lived.
