Canadian Senate suspends three members in expenses scandal

By Randall Palmer
OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian Senate suspended three of its members for "gross negligence" on Tuesday in a scandal over expense claims that has damaged the reputation of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Conservative majority in the unelected Senate voted for the two-year suspensions without pay as Harper's office tried to deflect charges it was more deeply involved in the scandal than it initially admitted.
A Senate committee ruled that the three Conservative appointees - Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau - had claimed housing and other expenses to which they were not entitled.
All three say they were simply following Senate rules and are being suspended without due process. They are also all under criminal investigation by the police, but no charges have been laid.
The Canadian Senate does not have the power of its U.S. counterpart, because the senators are appointed by the prime minister. But its formal support is still required for legislation that passes the elected lower chamber, the House of Commons.
Fallout from the scandal reached Harper's office over the summer after the Conservative prime minister's then-chief of staff, Nigel Wright, gave Duffy C$90,000 ($86,000) of his own money to help him pay his expenses back.
Duffy says the prime minister's office hatched a plan to cover that up. Duffy admitted in the Senate last week that he had taken part in that "dirty scheme" and used false cover-up lines emailed to him by the prime minister's office.
In a letter released to the media on Tuesday, police asked Duffy's lawyer for copies of emails and other documentation about those allegations, which it said "may potentially be evidence of criminal wrongdoing by others."
Harper's office says it is assisting the RCMP in providing any information it requires.
Harper has repeatedly said Wright, who has since resigned, had acted without his knowledge or approval. But the opposition has questioned Harper's credibility and the Conservatives have lost support in the polls.

Meh, just like the 1.1 billion dollars paid for Liberal votes in Ontario, it's no big deal.

None of the smoked crack.

For those in favor of suspension- has anyone noted that the investigations were directed- that due process was non existent- That no procedures existed - that the Senate has no processes to monitor itself.
Fuk me- This was not just about those 3 Fukwad Senators.

So a coup d'etat might be acceptable at this point then?

No. I'm angry with the graft and self-entitled attitude. I'm also being flippant in expressing it.

I'm not advocating the entirety of all military personnel to refuse orders handed down to them. Nor am I advocating storming Parliament en masse either.

But I do think citizens in this nation need to stand up and be heard clearly on this.

Me too, I am just probably more prepared to take radical action to stop it and prevent it happening again.

I'm not!
I'm not advocating the entirety of all military personnel to refuse orders handed down to them.
I only advocate they refuse unlawful orders that have nothing to do with protecting Canada and Canadian citizens.
Nor am I advocating storming Parliament en masse either.
Too bad. That is what it is going to take to change the system and prevent this sh*t happening again. Do you really believe it's gonna change because 3 senators get suspended and we wag our collective finger at parliament?
But I do think citizens in this nation need to stand up and be heard clearly on this.
I think we need to stand up, toss all the a$$holes in Ottawa in jail along with any law enforcement officials and judges that refuse to do it and rewrite a constitution that prevents this sh*t from ever happening again. If that requires the collective force of the citizens so be it. If we don't our children and grandchildren and their grandchildren will face the same issues.

My point is, apathy. No one is investing any angst or righteous anger, because it just doesn't sell!

If the Ontario Liberals freebased 1.1 billion kittens, or the Senators huffed some gas while drunk, watching tranny porn, the media would tell the unwashed masses to get enraged and they would.

Some believe this will die a natural death now but I don't think its going away
for a while. The labels will change. Instead of Tory Senators they will now be
labelled former or suspended Tory Senators. The opposition smells blood the
media smells blood and the sharks will play it out to the end.
Of course the investigations, allegations and suspicions will be heightened now
that they are suspended. Its a long way from over

there's a difference between apathy and lack of potential for debate.

There are just certain topics that are not conducive to argument.

Sure it will be great fodder for the Libs and NDP and media for quite some time and when it dies down a bit the 3 amigos will disappear quietly into the background without going to jail and things will then continue as they have before. Thinking some media furor for an extended period will remove corruption from a corrupt system is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
