HIGH RIVER ‘Hell to pay:’ Residents angry as RCMP seize guns from High River homes (with video) — RCMP revealed Thursday that officers have seized a “substantial amount” of firearms from homes in the evacuated town of High River.
“We just want to make sure that all of those things are in a spot that we control, simply because of what they are,” said Sgt. Brian Topham.
“People have a significant amount of money invested in firearms ... so we put them in a place that we control and that they’re safe.”
That news didn’t sit well with a crowd of frustrated residents who had planned to breach a police checkpoint northwest of the town as an evacuation order stretched into its eighth day.
“I find that absolutely incredible that they have the right to go into a person’s belongings out of their home,” said resident Brenda Lackey, after learning Mounties have been taking residents’ guns. “When people find out about this there’s going to be untold hell to pay.”
See photos from the scene.
About 30 RCMP officers set up a blockade at the checkpoint, preventing 50 residents from walking into the town. Dozens more police cars, lights on, could be seen lining streets in the town on standby.
Officers laid down a spike belt to stop anyone from attempting to drive past the blockade. That action sent the crowd of residents into a rage.
“What’s next? Tear gas?” shouted one resident.
“It’s just like Nazi Germany, just taking orders,” shouted another.
“This is the reason the U.S. has the right to bear arms,” said Charles Timpano, pointing to the group of Mounties.
Officers were ordered to fall back about an hour into the standoff in order to diffuse the situation and listen to residents’ concerns.
“We don’t want our town to turn into another New Orleans,” said resident Jeff Langford. “The longer that the water stays in our houses the worse it’s going to be. We’ll either be bulldozing them or burning them down because we’ve got an incompetent government.”
Langford blasted High River Mayor Emile Blokland over comments made Wednesday in which Blokland said residents will be allowed to return after businesses, such as hardware and drug stores, are opened.
“It was ridiculous,” said Langford. “I think he’s a puppet on a string.”
Langford said Premier Redford should come to High River to address residents’ concerns and provide information.
“This is at the highest tension,” he said. “What’s going to happen next is that people are just going to be walking across these fields, and I don’t care if they put hundreds of thousand of police officers there, they’re not going to stop from getting in.”
Sgt. Topham said he didn’t know when residents would be allowed to return to their homes. “People much higher up are going to make those decisions,” he said.
He did confirm that officer relied on forced entry to get into numerous houses during the early stages of the flood because of an “urgent need”, said Topham.
Police are no longer forcing themselves into homes and the residences that were forced open will be secured, he said.
Topham said the confiscated firearms have been inventoried and are secured at an RCMP detachment. He was not at liberty to say how many firearms had been confiscated.
“We have seized a large quantity of firearms simply because they were left by residents in their places,” said Topham.
The guns will be returned to owners after residents are allowed back in town and they provide proof of ownership, Topham added.
Residents promised to returned to the checkpoint at noon every day until they are allowed to return to their homes.

This girl doesn't get it. Why can't they return and why are guns being seized?

I guess all houses that are left for one or two days could be deemed by the rcmp as unsecured and searched for guns .. if the guns were stored correctly and the doors were locked and the rcmp were doing there job of patrolling the town..the entering of the house for the gun is another small step toward a rightwing police state

What was also interesting was the political response made by the libs and ndp, where they accused the cons of making a political response:lol:

The seizure of firearms by the RCMP is deeply disturbing. I'm sure it's intentions were good. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The seizures produce a visceral reaction for me.

If the city is in lock down there should be no need to enter homes by the RCMP.
This is clearly a violation of peoples property and there should be some action
taken. The police are supposed to serve and protect not take the opportunity to
snoop and behave in a manner that violates people privacy. This is not acceptable.
The vacates the need for warrants to enter people's homes. It is becoming a case
of you almost trust bikers before you can trust the police. No wonder people can't
get back into their homes, the police haven't finished going through peoples
private belongings yet.

When you have a police force that has been out of control for as long as the RCMP
does it matter anymore. The higher authorities either don't know or play down all
the violations anyway. We have cops stealing drugs from evidence rooms, killing
someone at Vancouver Airport because he couldn't speak English, to doing any
number of crimes, child porn, shooting their wives, beating people up in their cell,
sexual acts on fellow members who are women. This does not sound like a police
for to me anymore. So if they bir brass doesn't know what is going on or they ignore
what they know, it encourages the members to go even further. We need the RCMP
cleaned up period. Perhaps we should have an inquiry and have Hells Angels
conduct that enquiry. After all the police seem to be behaving worse than the biker
gangs.

Well if this isn't the perfect setting to start a massive revolt against the govt and RCMP in their attempts to form a police state I don't know what is. Being the weekend I am quite tempted to take my quad and sidexside along with a few things that go bang down there and help these people take their town back. This is disgusting and what is most disgraceful is that a lot of Canadians will blindly let it happen.

It has long been prophesied that the Orwellian, Big-Brother world will not be the result of huge fight but will be ushered in with no fanfare right under the noses of the populace. This would seem to be the beginning of the end of any kind of freedom or personal rights & property in this country.

I'm confused here. The initial report says police had to break into homes to search for firearms yet we now have a top officer saying they were left in plain view. Which is it? How is a gun in a locked house in plain view?
He did confirm that officer relied on forced entry to get into numerous houses during the early stages of the flood because of an “urgent need”, said Topham.
RCMP officials said at the time that hundreds of weapons that had been left out in plain view and not secure had been taken to the High River detachment.

Hard to secure a town. The RCMP were on a legitimate search to ensure all had evacuated the town.
Imagine the uproar if an elderly or a disabled person living alone was later found dead.
Then you would have been demanding why the RCMP did not ensure all persons had evacuated the town.
