CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Advocates for missing adults and a longtime City Councilman called Friday for Cleveland police to conduct an audit of its missing person cases, after the discovery that police removed Michelle Knight's case from an FBI database 15 months after her disappearance in 2002.
Councilman Michael Polensek said in an interview that the news that Knight's entry in the database was pulled because police were unable to contact her mother to verify that she was still missing raises the question of how many more cases might have fallen through the cracks through the years.
"That's the troubling thing about it," Polensek said. "This young lady was snatched and disappeared, and between the police response and her family moving out of town, it was like she just fell off the face of the Earth. Are there others out there in similar circumstances?"

This has opened up a need to examine possible questionable standards of procedure and practices.
