A former member of the SS, who was allegedly a guard at Auschwitz, has been arrested in southern Germany.

About 1.5 million people were murdered at Auschwitz in German-occupied Poland during the War. It was liberated by the Soviets in 1945.

Hans Lipschis, 93, was taken into custody after authorities concluded there is "compelling evidence" he was involved in crimes at the camp while there from 1941 to 1945, prosecutor Claudia Krauth said.

Lipschis has acknowledged being assigned to an SS guard unit at Auschwitz but maintains he only served as a cook and was not involved in any war crimes.

A judge, however, upheld an arrest warrant after deciding there was enough evidence to hold Lipschis before charges on accessory to murder are brought.

Bringing formal charges, a process similar to a US grand jury indictment, would take another two months, Ms Krauth said.

In the meantime, a doctor has confirmed Lipschis' health remains good enough for him to be kept in detention.

Lipschis is No4 on the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's most wanted Nazis list

Hell, the CIA was put together originally using former SS officers. Why aren't they after them?

How old was this guy when he was at Auschwitz: twenty two? He sure as hell wasn't one of those in charge of anything important. We all know that you didn't resign from the SS. Was he ex-Hitler youth? What chance did he have?

Any of these guys 22?
Einsatzgruppen (Mobile Killing Units)

And how old do you have to be where murder or mass murder - genocide charges cannot be laid.

I think it is just a ploy to try and keep the movement relative 60 years after the fact. History will inevitably repeat itself some day. Maybe not with the Jews but someone. Maybe it will be the Jews killing off the Palestinians.

Palestinians stand a better chance of being eradicated by other muslims than by Israelis.

He was 19 when the war started. If he is guilty of anything, it is following orders.

So he is innocent due to following order?

Definition of 'Nuremberg Defense'
The Nuremberg Defense is a legal ploy in which the defendant claims he/she was "only following orders" from a higher authority.

The "Nuremberg Defense" is often used by U.S. companies and U.S. government entities to defend themselves against charges of reverse discrimination. They claim that giving preference in hiring and promotion to certain, preferred races and ethnicities is, in fact, mandated by the U.S. government's civil rights laws and that they therefore cannot be held legally accountable for the alleged reverse discrimination. In other words, they were "just following orders".

The term "Nuremberg Defense" was originally coined during the Nazi war crimes trials at Nuremberg after World War II. Nazi war criminals who were charged with genocide, mass murder, torture and other atrocities used the defense "I was only following orders" so frequently that the argument became known generically as "The Nuremberg Defense".

The "Nuremberg Defense" is quite effective in reverse discrimination cases if the reverse discriminator was, in fact, following government rules and regulations. Just as during various war crimes trials during the past 60 years, if the government at whose behest the alleged illegal act was committed happens to be in power, and happens to be running the court in which the case is heard, then the defendant (reverse discriminator) is generally granted immunity from the
