TORONTO - The Duke of Edinburgh got a uniquely Canadian royal welcome Friday.
In an extraordinary gesture at the Royal York Hotel shortly after his arrival in Toronto, Prince Philip was given this country’s top civilian and military honours to celebrate his six decades of service to Canada.
Gov.-Gen. David Johnston presented Queen Elizabeth’s husband with the Order of Canada and the order of Military Merit — the two principal Canadian orders.
It was the first day of a 24-hour whirlwind tour for Prince Philip.
On Saturday, he’ll have a private breakfast with Lt.-Gov. David Onley, Premier Kathleen Wynne and other dignitaries first thing in the morning.
