Bombardier wins $440 million German rail contract

BERLIN — Bombardier Transportation has been granted a $440-million contract to design and supply major components for the next generation ICx high-speed trains for Deutsche Bahn AG.

The order comes under a framework agreement with Siemens AG signed in May 2011. DB AG recently expanded its original order by an additional 170 coaches.

Bombardier Transportation, a division of Montreal-based plane and train maker Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B), said in an announcement Monday that it will supply Siemens with all the body shells as well as trailer bogies and other components for the new ICx fleet.

Bombardier will also carry out the final assembly of all end coaches and of some intermediate coaches.

The steel car bodies, which promise significant reductions in energy consumption, are being developed in the Bombardier factory in Hennigsdorf, Germany, and are being manufactured in Gorlitz, Germany.

Hennigsdorf is responsible for the final assembly of all ICx end coaches. Bombardier will also carry out the final assembly of up to two intermediate coaches per train at this site, the company said.

That's just terrible. The EU really should protect its own. Heck, Germany ought to protect its own. No, no, Hennigsdorf should protect its own! Then everyone should have a job! What a wonderful world.

Siemens, the partner is German. Siemens' standards of quality and cutting edge tech says Bombardier has what they want. That's a good thing.
