Two months after an Al Qaeda splinter group attacked a gas plant in the Algerian dessert, killing almost 40 foreign workers, the RCMP has confirmed that at least one of the terrorists was a Canadian citizen.
The RCMP said Monday it had identified “Canadian human remains” in Algeria. Police would not elaborate, or say how many bodies they were referring to, but officials said the remains were linked to the recent attack.
About three dozen armed Islamists led by Al Qaeda-linked Mokhtar Belmokhtar stormed the In Amenas plant on Jan. 16 and held hundreds of workers hostage for four days. All but three were eventually killed by Algerian troops.
Algerian officials said the group planned the operation in Mali before crossing into Algeria from Libya. The attackers were later identified as nationals of eight countries, including Canada, but that has only now been verified by the RCMP.
“The RCMP confirms that Canadian human remains have been identified in Algeria,” Cpl. Laurence Trottier said. “As this is an ongoing investigation no further information will be given at this time.”
Police did not provide names or any other information about the Canadian involvement, which comes as security agencies are warning that dozens of radicalized Canadians have ventured abroad to join Al Qaeda affiliates.
