CHBC Okanagan | Kelowna protest at Enbridge hearings

I don't personally care whether the pipeline goes ahead or not. However those not wishing the pipeline would have much more credibility if they had a viable plan to put in place to replace the revenue that would not be gained by having the pipeline. Among the protestors was a school teacher (who is part of a demographic demanding a higher salary). Service sector employees don't generate money...........you have to either be connected to mining or killing to do that. So if you are going to protest you'd better have an alternate viable plan. You can't suck and blow at the same time. (Not withstanding didgeree doo players) -

When you look at the next 30 years for the oil sands and approx 1 Trillion dollars in tax revenues (Prov - Fed) pays for a lot of programs.

Exactly............we are a resource based country, we have to be able to get our products to market, simple as that. Not practical to transport oil by rickshaw!

But Kitimat is not the best port for oil tankers.

Quite posssible, but I doubt if a pipeline along the Skeena River corridor to Prince Rupert is possible. (Unless it was placed on stilts for about 90 miles)

It is not the worst either. I would prefer going down the channel another 20 miles or so but with escort tugs it would take gross incompetence to create a disaster.

I for one think all resources leaving this country should be Finished product only.
We should also practice what we preach as it were there is an embargo against
Cuba and yet we deal openly with China a huge offender of common decency
and human rights.
Why would we keep fueling a nation that we are going to compete with in a much
bigger way in the future. The last time we did this it was with one of Axis Powers
and we paid dearly for that.
I do not agree with being a resource nation either we should be a finished product
nation and provide jobs for us. If people want the product make them pay big time
no special deals.
Tonight the Quebec Government has also said they could throw a monkey wrench
into the free trade deal with Europe and i hope they do

The next port which I understand is free and clear of hazards that Kitimat has is approx 200 k further? Not sure???

Prince Rupert. Probably close to that distance by land. There is nothing wrong with using Douglas Channel. It is deep although not all that wide in places. That is why I would prefer going farther down channel towards Millbank Sound. That way the outer islands act as a natural breakwater giving ships a place to hide out and pick their time to hit the open Pacific. I'm not all that familiar with the water between the mouth of Douglas Channel and Pr. Rupert since I never logged any farther north than that and it has been about 20 years now since I have even been in the area.

When it comes to oil, what is the "finished product"? Sewing machine oil?

Why not? The inlet is already dead from from sodium fluoride from aluminum smelting. You can't kill something twice. The Asia Pacific Gateway is a massive project and the oil terminals are just a couple of lots and lots of terminals handling everything from grain to uranium.

If the pipeline doesn't go through the terminal still goes ahead and the oil goes from AB/SK by rail. That's already the back up plan and one that can't be stopped because rail is already approved as a viable means of oil transport through that corridor.

It doesn't matter to me if it goes by rail if that's what the greenie weenies want, sloppy rail it will be and they can't do a damn thing about it.
