I'm surprised Discover Channel isn't following these unsung heroes around....

I wonder if anyone has applied for this job thinking it was the Rat Patrol like in TV?

CALGARY - City officials have confirmed a rodent found in a New Brighton home is a roof rat, and provincial rat catchers will be scouring the area in case there's more.

On Thursday, Dan Reiter discovered a large dead rat that fell victim to bait in an attempt to catch whatever was roaming around his garage.

On Friday night, Animal and Bylaw Services picked up the rodent and confirmed it was a roof rat, said operations manager Doug Frizzell. Frizzell said the province's specialist has been contacted about the rat, which seems to be the only sighting.

So much for AB being a "Rat Free Zone"

A rat can eat $5 in grain a day.

And a female can produce upwards of 70 kids a year. One Rat Patrol couldn't handle the job.

That's what poisoned bait is for in cities.

Cats on a farm work for a living.

There aren't many in the coutryside. No-one is stupid enough to have them for pets or food for pet.

When you add in farm dogs, coyotes, foxes, weasles, ferets martins, badgers, falcons, hawks eagles and snakes the cats have lots of help and mainly keep the mice in check by living under and around the grain bins. If a rat actually makes it to the grain bin alive, he's met his maker or hit the jackpot for a day.

But just one day.

The 'roof' rat you refer to, is that also called the Norway rat, petros?

We don't have Norway rats in our area. We do have pack rats/wood rats - the bushy-tailed species and they have all the nasty habits of other rats plus a couple of their own. They steal things........mind you they always leave something in the objects place but still. They love anything shiny and can somehow manage to carry a soup spoon up to a nest built in the insulation of a ceiling. Reason I know this is that I had a neighbor who never did get around to putting anything other than clear plastic over that insulation. You could sit on the couch and look up at coins, spoons, bits of tin foil, a belt buckle...........it was like some kind of weird museum. The other nasty habit they possess is the a highly offensive odor left behind by their urine - it is of long-lasting duration.

The roof rat is a black rat, Rattus rattus. The Norwegian rat is a brown rat, Rattus norvegicus. Found this nifty comparison on Wikipedia:

You missed the obvious tonnington... Norwegian rats require a ratport (passport for Euro trash rats)... That's what is really at issue here; undocumented foreign rats stealing rat jobs from Canadian rats.

It's a big problem

No black or brown rats around here, just pack rats. Annoying little rodents who also stink, make messes of feed bins, etc. Fortunately, we also have a plethora of predators like martens, mink, owls, eagles, cougar, bobcat, lynx, coyotes, bear, etc. besides us pissed-off hummin beans.
