to 45 days of house arrest
Fifteen years after they were first targeted for investigation, five former Toronto drug squad officers were sentenced to 45 days of house arrest Friday.
It was an anti-climactic end to a landmark police corruption trial that has dragged through the court system for a decade, culminating last summer with the convictions of John Schertzer, Steven Correia, Nebojsa Maodus, Joseph Miched and Raymond Pollard for attempting to obstruct justice in relation to a 1998 heroin bust. Correia, Maodus and Pollard were further convicted of perjury.
“There is no dispute that the accused all breached the trust confided in them as police officers,” Justice Gladys Pardu said in her 22-page ruling, noting their offences served to “undermine public confidence in police forces generally.”
