What a joke this outfit is.

As many as two dozen performers hired to entertain at Toronto’s annual Caribbean festival in August have not been paid yet for their work.

The Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival — formerly Caribana — made less money than expected this year and hasn’t been able to pay off some of its debts yet, organizers confirmed.

Denise Herrera Jackson, chief executive officer of festival management, said the organizing committee regrets the delay and is working to pay the performers as soon as possible.

“The whole issue is being worked on right now,” she said. “We will be honouring our commitments.”

Jackson would not confirm exactly how many artists have yet to be paid, but said “about two dozen.” She could not say when the festival might be able to pay them.

Toronto musician Anslem Douglas said he performed a 20-minute set during the carnival and is angry he has yet to receive a cheque or get an update from festival organizers.

“If somebody had picked up the phone and said, ‘This is the situation: we have some money issues and we’re not in a position to pay you guys right now, but we’re doing everything in our power to get the money to you in the shortest timeframe possible,’ I could live with that. That’s what I’m saying. But not even a phone call. Not even an email. Nothing,” Douglas said.
