Gas prices set a record in California

California’s average gasoline price set a record Saturday of $4.614 for a gallon of regular, up 12.8 cents overnight – but anyone who filled up in the last few days probably isn’t surprised.

Gasoline prices skyrocketed after the Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance was knocked offline Monday by a power outage. Other lingering refinery and pipeline problems also contributed to the soaring costs at the pump.

Several service stations are charging more than $5 a gallon for regular gasoline. Some have stopped selling gas because they don’t want to pay the high wholesale price, which reached a record Thursday but eased somewhat on Friday.

California has the highest state gasoline taxes in the USA. They even add in sales tax, on top of the regular taxation (a tax on a tax). Sadly, they siphon off over 50% of those taxes for non vehicle/road uses.

They tested the gas deception in Canada and now they are bringing to the Americans just because protesting the gas prices is not working anymore and with the cutting off of the gas supply in Toronto one winter and half the gas pumps closing because of no gas sent the message to the gas consumers that the oil companies still hold the power.

A quick trip here: GasBuddy.com - Find Low Gas Prices in the USA and Canada and I quickly come up with this:

.....just for a little perspective. Keep in mind that the USA is a net oil
importer, & Canada is a net oil exporter, and that the USA is Canada's
largest customer.

It's all about supply. The refineries temporarily shut down and they gotta deal with the fallout.

That must mean we've been subsidizing them for years.

How about this for some perspective:

On average, over the last three months, gasoline has only been more
expensive than gasoline in Alberta for the last three days.

eh1eh's hemorrhoid operation being free? That would be some kind'a prediction,
and a breath of fresh air (yeah, I know) instead of the end of the world predictions
we keep on hearing about lately.

If everyone would stop buying from Esso and Pertocan for a month they would be forced to lower their prices. The following month we do Shell and CHevron.

Four and a half buck a gallon? Forgive me if I am not impressed. The last time I bought gas (about four days ago) it was about $1.15 a litre, which pretty much works out to the same thing as the California price. Try buying gas in Europe where it may run as high as $9.00 a gallon.
