Syrian rebels downed a military aircraft near Damascus on Friday, as fighting between the two nations—which began when a Syrian mortar shell killed five in Turkey—continued. The status of the four officers on board is still unknown. The attack came hours after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Syria to stop testing Turkey’s patience. “We do not advocate war, but we are not far from it,” he said. On Thursday the United Nations condemned Syria’s attack on Turkey, saying the strike violated international law. Although the country is retaliating, Turkey’s prime minister says his country has no intention of starting a war with Syria.
